As Sundays go this one is definitely in the “Super” category.
It doesn’t come much better than two cup finals, a London Derby and for the more cultured among us 1st v 2nd in France (Marseille v PSG) and 2nd v 3rd in Germany (Bayern Munich v Union Berlin).
Let’s start in Scotland where Glasgow will come to a standstill at 3.00pm for the Viaplay League Cup final at Hampden.
Both Celtic and Rangers go in to the match in incredible form.
The Hoops are on a 23 match unbeaten domestic run. Scroll back the last 69 games and Ange Postecoglou’s side have lost just twice (once to St Mirren, the other an extra-time defeat to Rangers in last season’s Scottish Cup), winning a remarkable 60 of those outings.
Rangers remain unbeaten since the arrival of Michael Beale, a run that extends before his appointment and stands at 16 without defeat. They may not be winning games with the same style as Celtic but they’re getting results and on a day like today that’s all that matters.
Most pundits are favouring success for the green half of the city at 6/5 and it’s hard to argue with that verdict.
Postecoglue has built a well-oiled machine while Beale’s squad is still a work-in-progress. Celtic look like they have more match-winners in their ranks at the top end of the pitch and at the back boast a defensive partnership of Carter-Vickers and Starfelt that have yet to taste defeat when paired together.
For Rangers to lift the trophy they’ll need to be on top of their game and hope that Celtic have an off-day, but those have been few and far between, so Celtic get the vote to win inside the 90 minutes at the national stadium.
If Glasgow is set to come to a standstill, then Newcastle will be like a ghost town by 4.30pm. Every man, woman and child will be either at Wembley or glued to a TV in anticipation of the Magpies lifting their first major trophy in almost 54 years.
Standing in their way are arguably one of the most in-form teams in the country, Manchester United, themselves aiming to end a trophy drought since 2017 under Jose Mourinho.
A piece of silverware would cap a brilliant turnaround by Erik ten Hag since his arrival at Old Trafford. They arrive at Wembley in great shape after knocking La Liga leaders, Barcelona, out of the Europe League in midweek. That made it just one defeat in 20 and the Red Devils rightly go in to the final as 23/20 favourites.
The final could be coming at the wrong time for Newcastle. They’ve not won since the middle of January and scored just nine goals in their last 11 matches. To add to Eddie Howe’s challenges he’ll be without number one goalkeeper Nick Pope who is suspended. In will come former Liverpool goalkeeper Loris Karius for a huge debut.
Manchester United look a great price at 23/20 to win given both sides recent form.
