Newcastle United were the highest profile casualties in the FA Cup yesterday following a 2-1 defeat at Sheffield Wednesday.
But arguably the biggest result of the round belonged to non-league Wrexham who know a thing or two about giant-killing. The Red Dragons wrote their own Hollywood script by knocking out 1987-winners and mid-table Championship side Coventry City in an epic 4-3 win.
Blackpool and Burnley also upset the odds and there’s a whole host of teams out to write their name in FA Cup folklore today.
A win for Stevenage at Villa Park would usurp anything Saturday had to offer. Steve Evans’ side are going well in League Two, second in the table and 12 points ahead of the play-off zone. But they’re up against cup expert Unai Emery who’s reputation has built on success in knock-out competitions.
At 18/1 Stevenage are the biggest outsiders today but they’ll take heart from some of Saturday’s results.
Match of the Day is at the Etihad where Man City and Chelsea meet for the second time in four days. A Riyad Mahrez goal was all that separated the sides in City’s favour but Chelsea’s injury list was added to thanks to injuries to Raheem Sterling and Christian Pulisic.
That makes Graham Potter’s task all the more difficult today. The fact that it’s Premier League opposition could force Pep Guardiola to field a more familiar line-up than he’d have liked.
The Blues have failed to score in their last four meetings with City and with just 20 goals scored in 17 Premier League matches it’s clear to see where Potter’s side are falling short this season.
City are priced at 3/10 to win but to do so without conceding it’s a much more tempting 6/5.
Rangers are unbeaten in five under new boss Michael Beale but a draw against Celtic on Monday wasn’t good enough and the Gers now find themselves 12 points behind the champions after the Hoops’ 2-0 win over Kilmarnock yesterday.
Dundee Utd usually make things difficult for Rangers at Tannadice, where they’ve won four points from the last two meetings between the sides, and the Terrors have hit a bit of much-needed form. They’re unbeaten in three and only a 94th minute Hearts penalty has prevented them from taking nine points from nine.
Rangers away form has been far from convincing, they’ve won just five of nine on the road and four of those have been by a one-goal margin. Similarly, under Beale they’ve only won one match by more than one goal so it could be another close one today.
Dundee Utd on the Double Chance appeals at 9/4, the same price as backing them +1 on the handicap but look to the Asian Handicap where United can be backed with +1.5 goals of a start at 1.900 (9/10) which means that even a Gers win by one goal would still return a profit.
