Newcastle could all but end Arsenal’s title challenge today in what should be a cracker at St James’ Park.
The Magpies have managed draws with Arsenal and Manchester City already this season but a win over the title-chasers today would boost their standing going in to next season when they’ll be aiming to become title contenders themselves.
Eddie Howe’s men have won eight of their last nine in the league and are in good goalscoring form, hitting the net 13 times in their last three outings.
Worryingly for the Gunners they’ve conceded eight in their last three on the road. A 3-1 victory over Chelsea got Mikel Arteta’s side back to winning ways but that was their first in five and today’s trip to the north east was always going to be a real tester for them in the run-in.
The bookies can barely split the sides, making Newcastle slight faves at 6/4 compared to Arsenal’s 13/8. It feels like a game that could go either way but it’s the Magpies recent purple patch in front of goal that catches the eye.
Two or more goals pays even money. Up against a team that’d kept just one clean sheet in 11 that looks a fair price.
At Tynecastle Celtic will be aiming to get the Premiership title wrapped up as quickly as possible today.
The Hoops are just one win away from an 11th championship win in 12 years and are on track for a world record eighth domestic Treble.
Hearts exited their recent slump in spectacular fashion last time out with a 6-1 win over Ross County. Interim boss Steven Naismith will be eyeing a big scalp today to boost his chances of claiming the hob on a permanent basis.
Celtic will be with Cameron Carter-Vickers and Alistair Johnson from their backline so could be a bit more vulnerable at the back. That, coupled with Lawrence Shankland seemingly back to his best, could mean goals at either end and BTTS appeals at 3/4 as does adding Over 2.5 Goals to make it an even money shot.
Over at Ibrox, Aberdeen will attract interest at 7/1. The Dons beat Rangers 2-0 a fortnight ago and ran them close in the previous two encounters. Barry Robson has been confirmed as permanent manager since that victory at Pittodrie which capped a brilliant run of results since he took temporary charge.
Whislt Robson has got a tune out a talented squad, his opposite number today, Michael Beale, must begin his rebuild in the southside of Glasgow. This season looks destined to be trophyless and with up to eight players out of contract this summer Beale will surely start to look ahead to next season. That could result in a revamped line-up today.
There’s unlikely to be much enthusiam around Ibrox following last week’s Scottish Cup exit at the hands of Celtic and if the Dons can get on the scoresheet first they could take advantage and leave Glasgow with something this afternoon.
Rangers have conceded first in 27 of 52 matches this season and Aberdeen to score first at 3/1 appeals.
