What an opportunity for Arsenal! Man City’s defeat in the Manchester Derby leaves them five points clear at the top of the table and if the Gunners can claim a victory today their fans can start believing that the Premier League title could be on its way to the Etihad.
Arch-rivals Spurs stand in their way and they’ve proven to be a tough nut for Arsenal to crack away from home, where they’ve failed to win in the last eight (D2 L6) at the old White Hart Lane and new Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.
But this is a very different Arsenal side. Confidence must be sky-high and if they’re ever to end that run then it’s today.
They’ll need to keep Harry Kane quiet though. The England captain is chasing down a few milestones, a goals would see him equal the great Jimmy Greaves’ club record, whilst a brace would make hims just the third striker to notch 200 Premier League goals. He’s got a terrific scoring record in this fixture, especially at home where he’s bagged nine in eight league games.
Kane is 11/8 to find the net this afternoon. If he does the Gunners will need to find a couple of goals to take the three points so Over 2.5 Goals could be the play at 4/5.
In the North-east Newcastle look a little on the short side at 1/2 to beat Fulham. Eddie Howe’s side have been hugely impressive this season but have stuttered a little lately, drawing their last two in the league and making an early exit from the FA Cup.
Today’s visitors are just four points behind them but haven’t been taking the same kind of plaudits. A well deserved 2-1 win over Chelsea moved them into sixth in the table and they could be dangerous opponents this afternoon, especially with Aleksander Mitrovic back in the fold.
The pitch at Hampden Park could have a big say on who’ll join Celtic in the Scottish League Cup final. After a testing 90 minutes for Celtic and Kilmarnock and the incessant Glasgow rain, Rangers and Aberdeen will need to contend with a soft, sticky surface when they meet at the national stadium this afternoon.
Rangers nicked the three points the last time the sides met, scoring two injury time goals to win 3-2. That should at least give the Dons some hope of making a game of it but their form away from Pittodrie is a serious concern. They’ve won just seven points from a possible 30 in the league and they don’t have a very good record in Glasgow – although they did win the last time these two met in a League Cup semi-final, Lewis Ferguson with the only goal of the game.
Michael Beale has enjoyed an unbeaten start to his tenure at Ibrox. Five wins and a draw have kept their Premiership title hopes just about alive, now he has the chance to lead his side to a final. Despite the conditions it’s hard to see anything other than a win for the Gers at 1/2.
There were 10 cards dished out in the last meeting and it’s 11/10 for over 5.5 today. The tricky conditions could contribute to a bit of a midfield battle.
