Sunday is the new Saturday in the Premier League with no fewer than six matches in the top flight today.
Chelsea v Newcastle is first up on Sky Sports Super Sunday and the Blues’s squad will be happy to get on with playing football after a week of turmoil at the club. In-form Newcastle are the visitors as they look to continue their climb to safety.
The Magpies have amassed 31 points so far but only two of those have come against teams currently in the top eight (West Ham & Man Utd). Nine of their ten defeats have come against teams in the top half of the table – the other against Leicester, so there’s a clear pattern of the Toon struggling against the better sides in the league but faring very well against those around them.
Fixtures have been kind to them lately, allowing them to go undefeated in the league since mid-December but today marks the start of the last 10 games where they’ll face seven of the current top eight.
We’ll learn lots about Newcastle today and they won’t be without backers at a lofty 9/1 despite Joelinton and Allan Saint-Maximin looking likely to miss out. Given what’s happening off the field at Chelsea they should be a no bet for any sensible punter at 1/3.
Both teams have failed to score in the last five meetings and this could be another low-scoring affair. Under 2.5 Goals in 11/10 which appeals as does no goal before the 27th minute – a bet that would’ve landed in five of Chelsea’s six Premier League games this year.
Elsewhere Jesse Marsch can claim his first win as Leeds boss at 4/7 against Norwich. Patrick Bamford could make a welcome return and help fire them closer to safety.
Southampton can add to Watford’s misery at St Mary’s. The Hornets have won just one in 15 and picked up only six points from the last 45 available. A Leeds / Saints double pays 6/4.
In Scotland Hearts booked their place in the quarter-finals of the Scottish Cup in a thrilling 4-2 win over St Mirren. There’s another two spots up for grabs this afternoon starting with Hibs visit to Motherwell at lunchtime.
Hibs have played out three goalless draws in a row and have now failed to score eight times under Shaun Maloney since his arrival in December. The sale of Martin Boyle and the loss of Kevin Nisbet through injury has left Hibs short of attacking options and that could be the deciding factor at Fir Park.
However, Well’s only win this year has been a 2-1 triumph over Aberdeen in this competition and they’re 10 without a win in the league. This one could go either way so a punt on the match being decided on penalties might not be the worst bet at 9/2.
Rangers need to put the highs of another terrifc result in Europe in midweek behind them and roll their sleeves up at Dens Park today. The Gers have found Dundee tricky opponents away from home, winning just one of the last four at Dens (W1 D1 L2) but they should be fired up for this one against to book a quarter-final place at the expsense of the Premiership’s bottom side.
Giovanni Van Brockhorst’s side should get the job done in 90 minutes at 1/3 and most likely without conceding at 11/10. Corners could be another profitable market. Rangers should enjoy the lion’s share of possession and with that we should expect more corners than their opponents. They’re 10/11 on the corner handicap at -3, alternatively you can have 4/6 on them taking Over 6.5.
