FOR 81 minutes Cheltenham Town dreamed of pulling off one of the biggest FA Cup upsets of all time but they couldn’t hold back the Manchester City tide and were hard done-to to eventually lose the tie 3-1.
It was as close as we got to shock on Saturday with only Southampton and Barnsley beating the kick-off odds against teams from their own division.
St Johnstone’s 3-0 win over Hibs in the Betfred Cup semi-final was probably the biggest result of the day and they’ll meet the winners of Sunday’s match between Livingston and St Mirren in the February Cup Final.
Sunday’s Betting Tips
Sunday’s five FA Cup ties kick-off at 12noon at Stamford Bridge where Luton are the visitors. Frank Lampard is expected to make several changes as he utilises his squad and attempts to find a winning formula that has eluded Chelsea too often this season.
A cup exit at the hands of a Championship side could be the final nail in the coffin for Lampard but they should be good enough to progress although punters won’t be lining up to support them at 1/9.
Brentford (4/1) v Leicester (4/6) could be an entertaining affair but both sides will be without their talismanic strikers for the match so bear that in mind before jumping in to the goals market here. 16-goal Ivan Toney is suspended for the match while Jamie Vardy will be out for a few weeks to have a minor hernia op.
The first all-Premier League match of the day is between Fulham and Burnley. Scott Parker has openly admitted that keeping Fulham up is his first priority and he expects to take the opportunity to freshen things up and rest players ahead of a busy period so the visitors, off the back of a brilliant 1-0 win at Anfield, could be worth a punt at 12/5.
It’s hard to get too excited about another Man Utd and Liverpool clash, last week’s being another in a long list of recent low-scoring clashes, but perhaps the cup puts a differen slant on things. The bookies can’t split them, making both sides 13/8 to win the match inside 90 minutes.
Jordan Henderson is likely to miss out, adding to Jurgen Klopp’s defensive woes and with a crucial trip to Spurs coming up on Thursday the Liverpool gaffer could rest more of his star players.
Sheffield Wednesday travel to Goodison Park in their best form of the season with four wins in five but a strong Everton line-up is expected and they’ll be boosted by the return of Dominc Calvert-Lewin. Carlo Ancelotti generally pays cup competitions due respect so Everton shouldn’t have too much trouble against the Championship side.
AC Milan and Inter both dropped points on Saturday so Juventus (1/3) have the chance to close the gap in the Serie A on Sunday morning at home to Bologna.
Bayern have hit 17 without reply in their last four meetings with Schalke and with Leipzig suffering a surprise defeat to Mainz on Saturday can move seven points clear at the top of Bundesliga.
