As we head in to the World Cup break Arsenal will be top of the Premier League table at Christmas – but it’s not the portent for success you’d think it might be.
In 29 Premier League seasons 14 teams have topped the league on December 25th then failed to win the title. The Gunners will hold a 5 point lead after results went their way on Saturday, despite that Bet365 still make Manchester City favourites at just 1/2. You can have 11/5 if you fancy Mikel Arteta to deliver Arsenal’s first title since 2004.
The Premier League wrap-ups ahead of a 5-week break today with games at Brighton and Fulham.
Unai Emery’s impact at Aston Villa was immediate last weekend as he guided them to an impressive win over Manchester United. He’ll be keen to build on that momentum and go in to the break with plenty of goodwill in the bank but in-form Brighton will provide a stern test.
The Seagulls can move back in to the top six with a victory following two wins in a row over Chelsea and Wolves, that followed a run of five without a win.
Villa tend to do well in this fixture, they’ve lost just once in the last 14 (W8 D5 L1). They’re winless away from home this season but could be a different proposition under Emery and now could be a good time to get on them at 16/5.
In today’s other game Fulham host Manchester United and a win for the home side could move them in to the top six and just a point behind the Red Devils.
But they’ll need to do it without talismanicstriker Aleksandar Mitrovic who is in a race to be fit for the World Cup. His nine goals have helped the Cottagers to ninth in the table and his absence will be keenly felt.
United are unbeaten in the last 14 meetings between the sides and Erik Ten Hag will be keen to sign-off with a win before the break. Three points would leave them just behind rivals Manchester City and give them plenty to look forward to in the new year.
