Newcastle have come a long way in a short period of time, it’s amazing what a few hundred million pounds of investment can do for you!
They only need to look at today’s opponents to see what’s possible when you’ve got access to unlimited funds. That makes this afternoon’s Super Sunday clash in the North East one of the richest in world football and for the Magpies, it’s the chance for them to measure themselves against the very best.
Since the start of the year, Newcastle have lost just four of 18 Premier League matches and two of those defeats have come against Liverpool and City (a 5-0 hammering the last time they met) so they’re already on an upwards trajectory before Eddie Howe really starts to splash the cash.
But the bookies reckon there’s still a huge gulf to be bridged and rate them 13/2 shots to cause an upset at home today.
Man City have made a flawless start to the campaign and you feel there’s more to come. Wonderkid Haaland will grab the headlines all season and he’s just 8/11 to get on the scoresheet and 5/2 to score first.
Both sides have yet to concede but that should change this afternoon and it’s 10/11 for both to score.
West Ham are without a win in their opening two matches but will take some confidence from a midweek victory in Europe. Brighton are no mugs though and will be delighted with their four points from matches against Man Utd & Newcastle. They’re also unbeaten in 10 Premier League matches against the Hammers and can frustrate them once more in London this afternoon.
Six of the last seven have finished all square and it’s 12/5 to be tied again. Each of those have seen both sides score but each of them have failed to score last time out and it could be a slow burner this afternoon. No goal before 29:00 appeals at 5/6.
In Scotland, if it isn’t broke don’t fix it, and Celtic’s consistency show no sign of letting up. It’s now 35 league games without defeat and with Hearts visiting Celtic Park in between two crucial Europa League play-off matches that run should extend to 36 this afternoon.
Again it should pay to be on Celtic corners at home but the bookies aren’t giving anything away. We’d need nine to get better than even money but that’s a big ask. First half corners always make more appeal as the Hoops always look to start strongly. Over 3 pays 8/11, while Over 4 pays a more attractive 8/5. One more market to catch they eye is the 4/5 on a Celtic corner inside the first 10 minutes, something they’ve done in two of their three matches so far.
