Jordan Spieth fans have been getting excited over the last few months, seeing their hero contend for PGA Tour titles again after a spell in the wilderness, and the Dallas man has assumed favouritism for the Texas Open this week.
Spieth, an 11-time PGA Tour champion who has not tasted victory since the 2017 Open Championship, had form figures of 4-3-15-4-48 going into the WGC-Dell Technologies Match Play last week. Spieth got through the group stages of the Match Play before losing in the last 16 to eventual semi-finalist Matt Kuchar.
A home-state mission at TPC San Antonio should provide Spieth with another great opportunity of getting back to winning ways and plenty of punters will be sniffing around the 10/1 that he is lifting the trophy on Sunday. The 27-year-old, who has Masters form figures of 2-1-2-11-3-21-46, will probably be a warm order for next week’s Augusta showpiece should he top the leaderboard in San Antonio. Masters punters will be eagerly following his progress in Texas.
Finau Seeking to End Streak of Near-Misses
Another PGA Tour star on a long winless run is Tony Finau, who still has only one title to his name. The 2016 Puerto Rico Open is the only event in which Finau has managed to complete the job.
The likeable Utah man has finished second an incredible ten times since his only victory. This year Finau has been regularly playing the bridesmaid role – he was second in the Farmers Insurance Open, the Saudi International and the Genesis Invitational. With so few superstars in attendance at TPC San Antonio this week, Finau will believe this could be the moment that he lands a long overdue second Tour triumph.
He was also second in the 2019 Charles Schwab Challenge in Texas and enjoys competing in the Lone Star State, so the 12/1 against his name appeals this week. Finau won one, halved one and lost one on his way to being eliminated in the group stages of the WGC-Match Play last week. He ended on a high with a two up victory over Jason Kokrak.
Scheffler can go one Better
Scottie Scheffler banked a cheque for more than a million dollars for finishing runner-up in the WGC-Match Play last week and the rising star of the PGA Tour could go one better in the Texas Open.
Scheffler came through a group containing Xander Schauffele and Jason Day, then beat Ian Poulter, Jon Rahm and Matt Kuchar in the knockout stages, a fantastic effort on his tournament debut. If Scheffler has enough energy left in the tank, the 14/1 about him winning the Texas Open could prove an enormous price. He finished 20th on his Texas Open debut in 2019, carding four under-par rounds, and he tees up in his home state this week full of confidence.
Scheffler has moved up to 22nd in the world rankings and has been threatening a breakthrough ever since joining the PGA Tour.
