He says: “When betting opened on the Championship in the summer, Dundee were just about the same price as their local rivals Dundee United.
“Two-thirds of the way through the season and United are 1/100 to win the title while Dundee trail them by a massive 24 points and aren’t even quoted in the betting.
“Dundee are just 8/13 to actually make the play-offs, something which would have seemed like a bare minimum return at the start of the season.
“Things aren’t getting any better either, as back-to-back league defeats were punctuated by their exit from the Scottish Cup.
“Dundee haven’t scored a goal in four-and-a-half hours of football and I wouldn’t want to take 5/4 about them winning away to Morton this weekend.
“And Ton look to be coming into a bit of form themselves and almost made it three Championship wins on the bounce with an away win at Tannadice but for a last-minute equaliser by Lawrence Shankland.
“So the 2/1 about Morton at home to Dundee looks fantastic value, as will the first-goalscorer odds for their players.
“Morton loan striker Nicky Cadden has eight goals from 23 appearances this season and is well priced at 9/1 with McBookie for the opening goal.
“Regular readers of this column will know I bang on about the importance of checking the comings and goings during the January transfer window.
“And Inverness Caley Thistle, who are not flush with cash, look to have lost some of their best defensive talent to Premiership sides in the window, with just Lewis Toshney from League One Falkirk arriving.
“Losing your two best defenders at a crucial point in the season may prove very costly as ICT attempt to return to the Premiership and they look too short at 4/9 for their home game with Alloa.
“Outsie of Dundee United, the Championship looks a pretty poor league this season and the Wasps in ninth are just five points from a play-off place.
“There is just no way any Championship team – apart from one playing the Arabs – should be 6/1, especially since Alloa have won their last two in the league and earlier this month went out of the Scottish Cup against Saturday’s opponents to a late goal.
“Alloa’s Kevin O’Hara has hit top scoring form of late with two goals in each of his last three games and now has eight from his last six games. McBookie make the up-and-coming 21-year-old striker 13/2 to score the game’s first goal.
“In the Premiership Jack Ross will have relished the winter break and the chance to get stuck into his players and Hibs came from behind in midweek to knock Championship high flyers Dundee United out of the Cup.
“The Hibees are unbeaten in January and I was very surprised to see them at 17/20 at home to St Mirren. The Buddies are well organised but don’t have much of an attacking threat and I’d be surprised if Hibs don’t beat them.
“Hibees striker Christian Doidge is the sort of forward Jim Goodwin could do with at St Mirren and he has scored 10 goals in his last 14 games, including a hat-trick in that midweek cup replay. Doidge is 7/2 with McBookie to be the game’s first goalscorer.”
