The DPWorld Tour remains in Africa with this week’s SDC Championship at St Francis Links, Eastern Cape, South Africa .
The 156 field with the top 65 including ties making the cut will all be competing for a share of the $1.5M prize purse with the winner collecting the SDC Championship title and a winner’s cheque for $250,050.
This will be the first time this event has been played and is co-sanctioned by the DPWT and Sunshine Tour.
As far as I’m aware there is no UK TV coverage for this event but Supersport, a local South African sports network will be showing live coverage.
St Francis Links will be playing 7,192 yards long this week, it’s a par 72 semi links track which is open to the elements and the wind is forecast to blow at Eastern Cape this week to make it more interesting.
I’ve already posted my Valspar Championship preview for the final event in the Florida swing series over on the PGA Tour so be sure to have a look if you’ve got the time.
The weather is forecast to be cloudy with sunny intervals on Thursday & Friday but it’s expected to brighten up over the weekend. Breezes will peak at around 25mph.
Jayden Schaper 25/1 EW 1-6 places Boylesports
For my first and main betting tip to win the SDC Championship I’m going to single out Jayden Schaper 25/1 EW 1-6 places Boylesports.
The talented South African kid who celebrates his 22nd birthday on Wednesday could leave St Francis with the best present ever as he seeks to win that maiden DPWT title. The former No. 1 South African amateur has won almost everything at that level and broke onto the scene with a Top 10 finish at the South African Open in 2020, he also finished runner-up at the Alfred Dunhill Championship the same year.
With South Africans having won half a dozen of the last nine DPWT events on home soil and with Jayden Schaper arriving here with course experience and having finished 5th, 6th and 10th all inside the Top 10 at this venue, it could be the best chance yet for the youngster to lay his mark.
With three Top 20 finishes at the last three times of asking T7th at last week’s Magical Kenya Open, T13th Hero Indian Open and T17th Thailand Classic, Schaper arrives home with form in the bag and it could be the happiest birthday yet for this talented kid as he bags his maiden W this weekend in his homeland.
George Coetzee 28/1 EW 1-7 places PaddyPower
For my next best selection I’m going to recommend another South African and a proven winner around St Francis, George Coetzee 28/1 EW 1-7 places PaddyPower.
The 36-year-old from Pretoria arrives here with more experience than most in this field having won five DP World titles and course management could take that figure up to six this weekend at Eastern Cape. Three of his five DPWT victories were on home soil and he has won almost €10M to date in all competitions with over half of those earnings won in South Africa.
My only concern is three missed cut’s already this year for Coetzee but last time out he finished 3rd at the Medclinic Invitational on the African Tour.
George Coetzee is head and shoulders above most in this weaker lineup and he could use all his experience and expertise as well as course management to cruise to victory as he adds the SDC Championship to his collection.
Calum Hill 50/1 EW Unibet 1-6 places
For my final outright pick this week I’m going to advise one of our own since it is a Links Course and for that reason, I’m going to include Calum Hill 50/1 EW Unibet 1-6 places. The 28-year-old Scot from Kirkcaldy has plenty of links golf experience behind him having grown up playing most of his golf in the kingdom of Fife on some of the best Links Courses on the planet.
The weather could also play into his hands so an advantage could be had there for the Fifer as he negotiates the howling winds, he’s done that many a time up the east coast of Scotland. He has two Top 20 finishes already this year 20th last weekend at the Magical Kenya Open and 13th at the Dubai Desert Classic.
Calum Hill won an event on the DP World Tour when scooping the Cazoo Classic in 2021 and has also come close on another few occasions. He has also had multiple winners on the Challenge Tour and I’m thinking that he can double up this coming Sunday playing some good Auld Links golf in tricky conditions that suit his game to a tee. He could make this look easy compared to the rest.
So all that’s left now is the match bet and for this week’s Nap in Eastern Cape, I’m going to advise that Jayden Schaper beats Adrian Otaegui over 72 holes 20/21 Bet365.
