FORFAR ATHLETIC almost lost manager Ray McKinnon to English football in the summer, but he’s still at Station Park and can guide his side to a win over Elgin City on Saturday.
The former Falkirk and Morton boss really improved the Loons last season, but seemed set to go to Forest Green Rovers with Duncan Ferguson before the former Everton striker left the post.
McKinnon did a quick u-turn and that can only be of benefit to the Angus side.
He’s brought in 11 mainly locally-based players and they are rightly regarded as one of the favourites in League Two.
They had an excellent Viaplay Cup campaign where they beat Championship side Arbroath before a game too far at St Mirren.
They should be too strong for an Elgin City side many have tipped to struggle this season. They have a very thin squad and early season results and appear to be reliant on young loanees from local clubs.
Forfar are 20/21 and it looks the most solid shout on the card this week.
At 8/11 QUEEN’S PARK are shorter than we would like, but it’s a fair enough price for the Spiders to beat a hapless Arbroath team.
Dick Campbell’s men were taken apart on their own patch last week on a painful evening for them with Dundee United romping to a 4-0 win.
They are short all over the pitch and this is a difficult trip to Glasgow for them.
This will be the last league match at Lesser Hampden before Queen’s Park return to the National Stadium and Dutch coach Robin Veldman led them to a fine win at Inverness last week and can make it two wins out of two.
FALKIRK look too big at 21/10 to win at Cove Rangers.
The Bairns’ plight needs little in the way of explanation. Put simply, every season they seem to start favourites to finally win League One and every season they blow it.
However, this particular season does look like it could be their best chance. The league doesn’t look particularly strong and they’ve started their season in decent fettle culminating in a comfortable 3-0 opening-day win against newly-promoted Annan Athletic.
Cove will be without one of their key summer signings after former Dundee star Paul McGowan was sent off at Hamilton last week for sticking his finger up at home fans – a classic ‘never change Scottish football’ moment.
Paul Hartley will have his work cut out getting Cove back to the Championship and Falkirk can get the three points at a big price in Aberdeen.
