AS you’d expect, the Scottish Premiership Top Scorers market is dominated by Celtic and Rangers players.
Currently only Skybet are offering odds but they’ve omitted Rangers’ Alfredo Morelos from their list as speculation grows that his future lies away from Ibrox Stadium.
Odsonne Edouard 5/2
That leaves Odsonne Edouard with the market almost to himself and he’s been chalked up as 5/2 favourite. The talented young Frenchman won the top scorer title last season, notching 22 goals in his 27 appearances on his way to picking up the Scottish Football Writers’ Player of the Year.
Jermaine Defoe 4/1
Jermaine Defoe out-performed Edouard in the goals-to-minutes ratio however, bagging a goal every 77 minutes played and in Morelos’ absence he’s 4/1 second favourite to be top scorer. However Defoe has already picked up a knock and will miss the start of the season and despite signing a permanent deal the 37-year-old is likely to be used as back-up by Steven Gerrard.
Then comes Christian Doidge (Hibs) and Sam Cosgrove (Aberdeen) at 12/1.
Christian Doidge 12/1
Doidge blossomed after Jack Ross’ arrival at Easter Road last term. After failing to score in his first nine league matches he then went on a run that saw him score 12 in 20. If he can keep that kind of form up he could be an outside contender.
Sam Cosgrove 12/1
Despite a shortened season Sam Cosgrove bettered his previous campaign’s tally in 2019-20, scoring 23 goals in all competitions (11 in the league). After turning down a move to Guincamp in the summer Cosgrove will be pivotal to the Dons’ success again this season.
Patryck Klimala 14/1
Other notable contenders include Celtic’s Patryck Klimala (14/1) who looks to have bulked up during lockdown and if he breaks through, could be the foil for Edouard if Neil Lennon persists with two up front.
Ryan Christie 33/1
Celtic’s Ryan Christie could be good each-way value too at 33/1. The attacking midfielder has a keen eye for goal and notched an impressive 19 goals for the Hoops last term.
Lawrence Shankland 25/1
The Championship’s top scorer Lawrence Shankland could also make a splash for newly-promoted Dundee Utd. He’s 25/1 at the moment but could move before the transfer window has closed, with Rangers supposedly interested should Morelos move on. If that’s the case then 25/1 could be a steal.
There could yet be a lot of movement this transfer window, especially at Ibrox so Rangers fans would be best to keep their money in their pocket until they know the whereabouts of Mr Morelos.
For Celtic fans a punt on Edouard looks like money in the bank, although big clubs will be sniffing around him soon too.
Best bet for me is Ryan Christie each-way at 33/1. He finished in the top five last season so the bet would’ve landed and in 2018-19, his break-through season at Celtic Park, only Steven Naismith played fewer games and scored more goals than him.
With a goals to game ratio of one every 2.35 matches he should bank around 14-15 goals assuming he plays the majority of matches and he won’t be far away from the top five with that kind of return.
