Man Utd were unimpressive in their opening 1-0 win over Wolves on Monday and by all accounts should’ve conceded a last-gasp penalty, so Erik ten Hag will demand a better all-round performance in pursuit of the three points at Tottenham Hotspur.
Spurs, under Ange Postecoglou, promise to be an entertaining watch this season, as evidenced in last week’s 2-2 draw at Brentford so we should see an entertaining game in the early evening kick-off.
Over 2.5 Goals is a measly 8/15 but Over 3.5 at 13/10 looks backable.
Both Fulham and Brentford are having to adapt to life without their star strikers. Aleksander Mitrovic has looked on his way out of Craven Cottage all summer and he misses this afternoon’s match through injury, whereas Brentford’s Ivan Toney’s enforced absence still has several months to run.
After a win at Goodison Park last week, Fulham’s tails will be up and could just edge this one at 17/10.
Liverpool have had an unsettling summer but showed up well in their 1-1 draw at Stamford Bridge. They should carry that in to today’s match against Bournemouth at Anfield where Dominik Szoboszlai and Alexis Mac Allister are expected to make their home debuts.
12 months ago the Reds put nine past the Cherries and there’s no reason why they can’t rack up a few today.
Match of the Day should be at the Etihad in TNT’s 8.00pm kick-off.
The Toon Army must be getting very excited after last week’s 5-1 win over Villa but will they be brought back down to earth by Treble-winning Manchester City?
Well it could be a good time for Newcastle to be playing City. They’ve not quite looked as fluid so far this season and with the influential Kevin De Bruyne missing, alongside John Stones and Bernando Silva, Eddie Howe’s men might fancy their chances at 15/4.
The Asian Handicap gives the Magpies +0.5,+1.0 of a start at 1.970 – so half your stake back if they lose by a goal – not a bad insurance policy.
Of course they’ll need to keep Erling Haaland quiet but anytime you get the chance to back the Norwegian to score at even money, especially at home, you’ve got to take it.
In the Scottish League Cup Rangers should have a safe passage through to the next round at home to Morton. Dougie Imrie has done a great job with Ton but there’s no comparison in the budget or quality available to him and his counterpart in the Ibrox dugout, Michael Beale.
Imrie’s side were beaten 5-0 at Celtic Park back in January and it could be a similarly long afternoon for the traveling fans from Greenock.
The Asian Handicap Line is set at -2.5 and the Gers shouldn’t be too far off beating that although Beale may opt to rest one or two ahead Tuesday’s crucial clash with PSV Eindhoven.
We should see a good game in Paisley where two of the Premiership’s in-form sides meet. Both St Mirren and Motherwell won their groups in this competition and have started their league campaigns unbeaten.
Both sides usually show good attacking intent and we could see goals and Over 2.5 appeals at even money.
A quirk of the fixtures list x the League Cup sees Queen’s Park face Arbroath for the second time in a week in the Championship. It’s bottom versus top at Gayfield, largely as a result of the Spiders’ 2-1 win last week which saw them make it two wins from two.
They’re 19/20 to make it three from three but a punt on them to score two or more at evens could be a better option considering Arbroath have shipped 13 in their last five.
