There’s should be plenty of entertainment at St James’ Park in the Saturday night match, live on TNT Sports.
Newcastle boast one of the best home records in the Premier League, their only dropped points coming in a late collapse against Liverpool. They’ve already beaten Manchester City, Arsenal and PSG at home and at 20/21 look back-able against a Man Utd side who seem to be taking two steps forward and one step back at the moment.
The Magpies won 3-0 at Old Trafford in the EFL Cup and they can hammer home home advantage tonight. The Red Devils’ away wins have come at Burnley (20th), Sheffield United (18th), Fulham (14th) and Everton (19th*) but they’ve tasted defeat at Spurs, Arsenal, Bayern Munich and Copenhagen, further strengthening opinion on a home win.
It could be a fruitful weekend for Arsenal. Title rivals Manchester City and Spurs meet tomorrow so they’ve a chance today top open up a four point gap at the top of the table.
The Gunners turned in one of their best performances of the season in their midweek 6-0 win over RC Lens. They’ve hit 16 in their last four at the Emirates, an ominous sign for visitors, Wolves.
Manager Gary O’Neil conducted himself admirably in the fact of more VAR controversy at Fulham. He’s due a rub of the green but will need a large dose of luck to leave north London with anything today.
His side have scored in each of their last 10 top flight matches, but they’ve also conceded in each of those too. In fact they’ve not kept a clean sheet all season which bodes well for an Arsenal goals bet.
Goals have come from all over for Mikel Arteta’s side lately with 10 different players getting on the scoresheet in their last four games. If they continue in that vein then Over 2.5 goals, which pays 6/5 looks a runner for the Gunners.
In the Championship Leeds have an 8-point gap to bridge to reach the the automatic promotion spots but they’re building some nice momentum after picking up 13 points from their last five games and remain the only team unbeaten at home in the Championship.
Middlesbrough are the visitors to Elland Road and you’re never quite sure what you’re going to get from Michael Carrick’s side. They’ve been fairly reliable on the goals front recently though, scoring 13 in their last 5 games.
That points to Over 2.5 goals in this one at 8/13.
League leaders Leicester are having a bit of a wobble at the moment. They conceded in injury time at bottom-side Sheffield Wednesday in midweek which makes it just four points won from their last 12.
They’re in for a test in the early kick-off at the Hawthorns. West Brom have won four of their last five, only losing out to in-form Southampton during that run and the Baggies could be one for a long-shot acca this weekend at 19/10.
Ipswich and Southampton are two form sides that are at home and the Double on them both winning pays a just over 9/4.
There’s a curious anomaly on the corners market in the Championship where Watford lead the way at home with 7.30 per game but have the fewest on the road at a paltry 2.63. They’re away today at Hull who average 7.00 on home turf so if corners are your thing then an investment on the Tigers -0.5 on Asian Handicap Corners at 1.825 could be up your street.
In the FA Cup look out for goals at Newport v Barnet and Peterborough v Doncaster
The big battle in Scotland will be against the weather. Temperatures have plummeted this week and there’s already been three postponements and several pitch inspections planned for the morning.
If Livingston v Ross County survives then there will be worse bets than the 7/4 on the Staggies, under new boss Derek Adams, continuing their resurgence against a Livi side who are winless in 10.
The other two Premiership matches look a flip of a coin. Keep an eye out for Lawrence Shankland who’s scored six in six for Hearts and is 6/4 to net against Kilmarnock.
Motherwell claimed a very creditable point at Celtic last week which buys Stuart Kettlewell a bit of time but it’s now 10 without a win for Well. Dundee were beaten at home to Hibs last week and will be desperate not to have all their good work undone by sliding down the table. It’s very close to call but the value bet looks to be on the Dark Blues at 11/5.
In the Championship you can seldom go wrong back goals at Firhill where Airdieonians are the visitors. Partick Thistle have scored two or more in their last five and are 8/11 to do so again.
Clyde will have been buoyed by avoiding a Scottish Cup banana skin last week and can build on it by taking something at fellow strugglers Elgin City. Another one for the long shot acca at 21/10
