For a team that’s won just two of their last 13 fixtures Northern Ireland are a laughably short price to win this evening at 1/50.
It is however, San Marino they’re playing, whom they beat 2-0 back in March, and yes the Northern Irishmen should win this with a couple to spare but there’s no way they should be as short as 1/50.
Whilst San Marino are the lowest ranked team in the world, results are showing small signs of improvement. They can’t score for love nor money but they don’t appear to be conceding as regularly these days. They’ve kept tonight’s hosts, Slovenia and Kazakhstan to three goals or less in Group H and they conceded just 14 goals across 10 matches in 2022, albeit against largely low-grade opposition.
Admittedly they shipped six in Finland, four in Denmark and four at home to Slovenia but the first goal line has been set at 17 minutes tonight and La Serenissima have only conceded inside that mark in two of their last 10 competitive matches.
Against a Northern Ireland side that is lacking in confidence and winless in five that looks worth taking on at 5/6.
As if to illustrate how daft that price on Northern Ireland is, Italy are bigger odds (1/33 at Bet365) to win in Bari against Malta, who are a mere 36 places above San Marino in the rankings.
The Italians could take the shackles off tonight and will be looking to warm-up for their crucial clash with England on Tuesday by scoring a few goals.
Like San Marino, the Maltese have been keeping things tight of late but in World Cup Qualifying they conceded seven to Croatia and six to Slovakia. Wind a little further back and during Euro 2020 they lost seven to Spain, four to Sweden and four to Romania so they have that kind of result in them against quality opposition.
If the Italians are in the mood Over 3.5 Goals isn’t out of the question for them at 10/11.
In League One Burton Albion did us a turn on Monday by beating Cambridge United at 11/8 and they’re well priced at 16/5 today to make it seven without defeat in all competitions.
They make the trip to Lincoln City who have won just one of their last five in League One. The Imps have earned plaudits for their cup performances this season but it’s the bread and butter of that really matters and they’ve been on the slide lately.
Crewe are top scorers in League Two and are a surprising 5/6 to score at least two today at home to 22nd placed Tranmere Rovers.
Rovers have lost all five away from home whilst the hosts remain unbeaten at Gresty Road (W4 D2), so it looks like a choice between 19/20 on the home win or 5/6 on Alex to score two or more.
The Scottish Challenge Cup takes centre stage north of the border. Falkirk (11/10) who top League One could get the better of Championship side Queen’s Park who are winless in six in the League.
Raith Rovers (4/9), who have reached the final in the last three editions of the competition, should book their place in the last eight with a win at home to Montrose.
There should be goals at Queen of the South v Arbroath. Doonhamers’ matches in League One are averaging 3.44 per game whilst Arbroath have scored 16 in their last six, scoring two or more in each of them.
