Liverpool could have a huge say in the destination of the Premier League in the next 8 days. First up a trip to the Etihad this lunchtime, before they welcome table-toppers Arsenal to Anfield next Sunday.
Sandwiched in between for the Reds is a midweek date with Chelsea at Stamford Bridge and all that Jurgen Klopp will be concerning himself with is how his own team come out of a challenging week.
Klopp holds the upper hand in clashes with his adversary Pep Guardiola, winning 11 of 27 meetings and drawing seven but the odds are stacked against him today according the bookies who make City 8/13 versus 4/1 on Liverpool.
City come in to the game having scored 13 in their last two outings but there’s a major doubt over 42-goal Erling Haaland who missed out on international duty with a groin issue. Guardiola might risk the hitman however since Phil Foden is sidelined too.
Jurgen Klopp himself has admitted that he doesn’t know which Liverpool will turn up, so what chance do us punters have?
Even if the best version of the Reds, with much more at stake for City they should win if they bring their own A-game.
Arsenal will know the outcome from the Etihad before they kick-off against Leeds Utd at 3pm, regardless, nothing less than three points will do for Mikel Arteta.
The Gunners should get the job done – they’ve won all seven of their home fixtures against sides currently in the bottom half of the table – but they’re developing a habit of conceding goals. They’ve only kept six clean sheets in 16 matches since the turn of the year and just one in their last five. Leeds have scored six in their last two outings and definitely pose more of a goal threat at the moment. Both teams to score pays 19/20.
A Selhurst Park, Crystal Palace are 8/5 to begin the second Roy Hodgson era with a win over Leicester City. The Foxes have won just one of their last six league visits and one man they’ll need to keep in check is Wilfried Zaha who has scored more goals against Leicester than any other club. He’s 5/2 to find the net on his old gaffer’s return to the hotseat.
Hodgson will know that a win against one of their relegation rivals will buy him some early breathing space and that 8/5 looks tempting. Palace have been critised for their lack of shot nevermind goals lately but re-energised under Hodgson and up against a defence that’s not kept a clean sheet in the league since the middle of December they could find their scoring touch again. Over 1.5 Eagles goals pays 13/8.
On Thursday we highlighted Middlesbrough, Coventry and Blackburn as being on the shortlist from the Championship this weekend.
Boro are in pursuit of second spot and travel to the division’s second lowest scorers Huddersfield who sit third bottom. Michael Carrick’s side are short enough at 7/10 so definitely one for the away team accas.
Coventry are making a late push for the play-offs and have been in fine form but so too have today’s visitors Stoke who have climed to relative safety of 13th position after going four unbeaten so this one might be best left alone.
For a bit of value Blackburn Rovers still appeal at Birmingham this afternoon. Jon Dahl Tomasson’s side have actually drifet a little since Thursday and can now be backed at 15/8 to win. They’ve scored two or more in five of their last six so that might be a safer approach at a tasty 2/1.
It’s a tricky looking card in the Scottish Premiership this afternoon. Hibs can rarely be trusted at odds-on at home and Motherwell are in really good form under new boss Stuart Kettlewell. A draw could be on the cards at Easter Road.
Rangers are so short at 1/9 against Dundee United that there’s little value to be found but James Tavernier continues to be overpriced to score. The Ibrox penalty-taker is Rangers’ top scorer but there’s seven ahead of him in the betting. He’s handy from set-pieces too so the 6/4 (Betfair) on him finding the net in a game they should dominate isn’t the worst bet at Ibrox.
On the advice of Greg on this week’s Gambla Podcast it should be a low-scorer between St Johnstone and Aberdeen. Under 2.5 goals at 8/11 lands more often than not when these two meet.
Further down the divisions Falkirk, Dunfermline and Queen of the South all look solid bets make for a 7/5 League One Treble (but swap Falkirk out for Stirling – see below).
Also in League One, Airdrieonians have scored an incredible 18 goals in their last three matches and there’s been a crazy 38 goals in total scored in their last seven games. They’re the third highest scoring team in Scotland, behind Celtic and Rangers.
Even money on them to score two or more at Alloa can’t be ignored today.
And in League Two Stirling Albion, who are now top of the table and in pole position for promotion can hammer home their advantage at Elgin City where they’re 4/6.
