Anything less than a win for Arsenal at Nottingham Forest will all but hand the title to Manchester City before they get the chance to clinch it themselves tomorrow.
The Gunners’ 3-0 home defeat to Brighton on Sunday was the final nail in the coffin of their title challenge and it’s a matter of playing for pride for Mikel Arteta’s men between now and the end of the season.
Forest fans might think it’s a good time to play Arsenal but in a strange way all the pressure has been lifted and they can go and enjoy themselves in their last two fixtures. They’d probably be a lot shorter than 3/5 if the Premier League title was still on the line.
The Tricky Trees’ need for points at the other end of the table is much more desperate. They’re three points clear of the dreaded 18th place but they’ve a poorer goal difference than all the teams around around so could still be vulnerable.
Everton have a massive game as well today as they try to keep their noses in front Leeds United and Leicester City who occupy the remaining two relegation spots following Southampton’s relegation. They make the trip to Wolverhampton where the hosts have won the last four at home without conceding.
The bookies have both teams at 17/10 which is a measure of how hard this one is to call but Everton’s plight should give them the edge and it’s the kind of game you could see them win under Sean Dyche. Leeds don’t play until tomorrow and Leicester on Monday so it’s a real chance for Everton to put some distance between themselves and the drop zone.
A sneaky little bet on Jordan Pickford picking up a booking at 9/2 could be worth an interest – the England ‘keeper has already been carded five times this season and he loves to ‘run the clock down’ when he has to.
If Liverpool had found the kind of form they’re hitting now at the start of the season they may well be challenging for honours, as it stands they’re 5/2 shots to finish in the top four and secure a Champions League place. It’s now seven straight wins for the Reds who welcome Aston Villa to Anfield.
Villa’s race looks run and they’ve failed to win in their last three away matches (D1 L2) but Unai Emery is a canny operator and could set out to frustrate the rampant Reds.
The match could mark Roberto Firminho’s final bow in front of the Anfield crowd. 109 goals in 360 appearances for the Merseysiders is a great return and the Brazilian is 8/5 to sign-off with a goal.
Mo Salah missed a glorious chance to hit 20 goals for a fifth time in six seasons on Monday but he’s scored in each of his last five starts against Villa and is 11/10 to reach that landmark total today.
Double Salah up with Harry Kane at Spurs v Brentford. The England captain’s 27 league goals have been overshadowed by Erling Haaland’s scoring exploits but the 29-year-old is just three short of his best ever return in the Premier League (30).
In Scotland the lunchtime focus is on the battle for third place. Hearts host Aberdeen and only a win will do for the Jambos. They’ve fallen five points behind the Dons so not only do they need to close that gap but they’ve also got Hibs breathing down their necks, one point behind them, with an Edinburgh Derby on the horizon next weekend.
Hearts finishing out of the top four would be unthinkable considering how strong a position they were in just a few months ago. It’s a game neither will want to lose so don’t expect it to be too gung-ho in the opening stages. The first goal time has been set at 27:00 (5/6) and it’s unlikley we’ll see the net ripple before then.
At the bottom end of the table Dundee Utd can pick up three much needed points at Livingston. Livi have lost and failed to score in five of their last six (0-3, 0-3, 2-0, 0-2, 0-2) as they’ve limped towards the end of the season. United need to bounce back from two consecutive defeats and are 9/4 to do so today. It could be safer to back them with the benefit of the draw so take the 6/5 on Dundee United Draw No Bet.
