You can’t read too much in to the outcome of the Community shield but last week’s penalty shoot-out win won’t have done Arsenal’s confidence any harm.
Visitors Nottingham Forest are a massive 14/1 to win at the Emirates this lunchtime but that’s no surprise after they recorded the worst away record in the top flight last season.
With the Gunners just 2/11 to win try a BetBuilder that features Arsenal half-time/full-time and a second half goal for Mikel Arteta’s side at 10/11.
Match of the Day is at St James’ Park where Newcastle entertain Aston Villa.
The Magpies won the corresponding fixture 4-0 last season but Villa returned the favour with a 3-0 win at Villa Park – inflicting one of just five defeats (joint lowest with Man City) suffered by Eddie Howe’s side last term.
Unai Emery has a few injuries to content with the likes of Buendia, Dendoncker, Duran, Moreno, Ramsey and Traore all sidelined.
Newcastle’s home record could see them edge this but they might need to score a couple to do so, back Howe’s men to win and score over 1.5 goals at even money.
Fulham at 12/5 could be a bit of value at Goodison Park as could Sheffield United who are 21/10 to mark their return to the top flight with a win over Crystal Palace.
Defeat is unthinkable, even at this early stage of the season, for Michael Beale at Ibrox today. A 1-0 loss at Kilmarnock last Saturday, followed by an unimpressive 2-1 win over Servette in midweek has left Rangers fans with more questions than answers.
Livingston usually make a decent fist of things at Ibrox and David Martindale will be emptying the same kind of tactics that saw his side shut out Aberdeen last weekend.
Livi had three players booked and conceded 22 fouls in that one and look nailed on to pick up a few yellows today. They’re 4/5 to collect three or more or they can be backed at evens (2.00) at -1.0 on the Asian Handicap, meaning they’d need to get two more than Rangers for the bet to land or your money back if it’s just one more.
Malky Mackay will have been delighted with his team’s showing at Celtic Park last week. The Staggies may have lost 4-2 but made things uncomfortable for the defending champions in a hard-working performance.
That should set Ross County up nicely for a win today at 21/20 against St Johnstone. Expectations are low for the Saints following a poor League Cup group stage and opening day defeat at home to Hearts.
Further down the divisions Dundee Utd (home to Dunfermline), Queen’s Park (home to Arbroath) and Falkirk (away to Cove) all look solid picks to make it two wins from two, which pays a 43/10 Treble.
Last week we highlighted the terrific form of Stirling Albion who started their League One campaign with a win over Edinburgh City. They face a tough test at Alloa today but are on the long shot shortlist for today.
As are Stenhousemuir. They drew blank at home to Forfar last week and look overpriced to win at Peterhead who pulled off one of the surprises of the week last weekend. We’re banking on that being a bit of a freak result and happy to add Stenny to complete the long shot treble.
