There’s a few big prices in the FA Cup this afternoon but not too many look capable of a giant-killing.
Reading are the biggest outsiders at 16/1 ahead of their visit to Old Trafford tonight. With one foot already in the League Cup final it would be a major shock if Manchester United were dumped out by former player Paul Ince’s side.
The Red Devils have a busy February coming up with eight games in four weeks so Erik Ten Hag may take the opportunity to give fringe players some game time, even so they should have too much in their locker for the Championship side.
Sunderland (5/1) could be poised to take advantage if Fulham aren’t on the ball at Craven Cottage. The Black Cats were impressive in their 2-0 win over Middlesbrough last week and will be out to prove they’re capable of mixing it with teams from the top flight. Marco Silva might view the cup as a bit of a distraction with a European place in their sights, if that’s reflected in his team selection the upset of the day could come on the banks of the Thames.
League Two Walsall could give Leicester a run for their money at the Bescot Stadium. The Saddlers are one the form teams in the country, despite sitting mid-table they’ve tasted just one defeat since the middle of October – not the kind of trip a fragile looking Foxes side will relish. A Walsall goal appeals at 5/6.
Best bet of the day looks like the 5/4 available on Championship leaders Burnley at League One side Ipswich. The Tractor Boys have been a tough nut to crack at Portman Road this season where they’ve only lost once but after an excellent 4-2 win at Bournemouth in the last round Vincent Kompany’s side will feel confident they can progress again today.
It’s being billed as El Sackio at Easter Road this afternoon where two under pressure managers need wins to save their jobs.
In the Hibs dugout is Lee Johnson on whom the pressure is mounting after his side lost their second Edinburgh Derby 3-0 in a matter of weeks last weekend. In the Aberdeen dugout, somehow, is Jim Goodwin who has survived the sack despite a 5-0 defeat at Tynecastle and a humiltiating Scottish Cup exit at the hands of sixth-tier Darvel.
The Irishman has been handed a lifeline by his board but defeat today would surely be the final straw.
Hibs will be without captain Ryan Porteous who has moved to Millwall but the good news is that Kevin Nisbet is still at the club, for now, after he rejected a move to Millwall and could still feature today. If not then things could swing in the Dons favour at 2/1.
In the lower reaches in Scotland the League One & League Two leaders look solid bets this afternoon.
Dunfermline are flying in League One and make the trip to Clyde’s temporary home at Hamilton. It looked for a long while that the Bully Wee would be saved from relegation thanks to the Peterhead having a disaster of a season but they now find themselves rock bottom and without a single win since September. The Pars should be too good for them.
Dumbarton haven’t been outside League Two’s top two all season and now hold a four-point lead at the top, they host Bonnyrigg Rose who prop up the table at the other end. Add them for an 11/8 Scottish Double.
There should also be goals at Firhill where Hamilton are the visitors. Partick Thistle boast one of the highest goal counts in theri games at home with matches averaging 4.18. Hamilton have shown a bit of form in recent weeks and can contribute to Over 2.5 Goals.
It should be a similar story at Dens Park where it’s 3rd v 1st. Queen’s Park have a brilliant opportunity to open up an eight point lead on promotion favourites, Dundee. The three meetings between the sides in 2022 all finished Over 2.5 Goals.
Complete a Goals Treble with Over 2.5 Goals at Morecambe v Bristol Rovers. 21 goals have been scored in Rovers’ last six games and 18 in Morecambe’s last. Hopefully they can keep the goals coming today.
