The league flag will be unfurled at Celtic Park ahead of Brendan Rodgers first match of his second spell in charge of the Hoops.
Ross County are the visitors and could be lambs to the slaughter. Celtic’s last five flag days have resulted in 2-0, 5-1, 7-0, 3-1 and 4-1 wins and it could be another gala day for the Bhoys although Over 2.5 goals for Rodgers’ men pays a measly 1/2.
It should be a comfortable win but it could pay to turn to corners once more with Celtic at 13/10 to win over four in the first half. They might miss some natural width with Jota gone and Maeda suspended but it’s a game in which they’ll dominate possession and have plenty of shots so that looks worth a punt.
Aberdeen were transformed under Barry Robson who guided them to a third place finish when bottom six was staring them in the face mid-January.
If they’re to repeat that kind of performance they need to be winning games at the likes of Livingston who operate with one of, if not the, lowest budgets in the top flight.
It could be a stuffy one for the Dons but they’re very tempting at 6/4.
Hearts should also get their campaign off to a winning start at St Johnstone.
The Saints have had a shocker of a start in the Viaplay Cup and it could be a long season for the McDiarmid Park side.
Confusion reigns over the management hierarchy at Hearts but they’ve more than enough quality for another top four finish, starting with a win in Perth at 6/5.
In the Championship Dundee Utd got their campaign off to a flyer with a 4-0 win over Arbroath at even money.
Stirling Albion could be dark horses in League One. Darren Young’s side finished like a train to gain promotion from League Two last season and could give a few sides a bloody nose this term.
They produced the most eye-catching result of the Viaplay Cup group stages; a 4-0 win at St Johnstone, and looked worth backing at even money to beat an Edinburgh City side who lost all four group games in the cup with the concession of 14 goals in the process.
Money has come for Stirling since earlier in the week however which has seen them shift from 1/1 to 3/4. Over 1.5 goals for the Binos pays 8/11.
There’s also been some money for newly promoted Spartans in League Two who host Clyde in their first ever match at this level. The Lowland League winners are 4/7 to start with a win and that’s more than likely against the Bully Wee who have struggled to fill their bench in League Cup matches.
East Fife (3/4) are the other odds-on side in the bottom division up against a Peterhead side who don’t look to have improved much on last season’s shambles.
Middlesbrough look one of the stand-out bets in England this afternoon. Michael Carrick has made an impressive start to his managerial but Boro fell short of promotion in the play-offs. They can get this season’s attempt at a return to the top flight off to a winning start at home to Milwall where they’re handily priced at 19/20.
Late Goals
Posted earlier was a piece on changes to the directives for referess this season whereby we’ll see more added time at the end of each half. That could mean a few extra minutes for goals to scored, cards to be brandished or corners to be taken.
So let’s see if we can kick-off the season with a treble of late goals.
