The return of the Premier League means we’re back to a full fixture card this weekend. At last!
In the top flight Newcastle United should be one to watch this season. They ended the season strongly and have money to burn, but they’ve been thwarted in some of their attempts to bolster their squad so far so we may not see the best of them until the transfer window is closed.
However they host Nottingham Forest on their long-awaited return to the Premiership and the atmosphere should be electric at an expectant St James’ Park. If the Magpies start where they left off last season they should be good for the three points at 4/6.
Liverpool too, look a good thing on the opening day at Fulham. The Cottagers topped the Championship last season but they face a baptism of fire at lunchtime. the Reds will be keen to start on the right foot and will be bouyed by last week’s Community shield win. The should beat the -1 handicap at 8/11. For an even money shot try Liverpool HT/FT could with Over 1.5 Liverpool goals.
Burnley impressed last week with a 1-0 win at Huddersfield and can build on that with another win over Luton at Turf Moor. Vincent Kompany has had a big rebuild on his hands but has hit the ground running and another confidence-building win should be on the cards at 4/6.
In Scotland it’s League One side Clyde who have been all the rage with punters this week. They opened their campaign with a brilliant 4-1 win at Queen of the South last week and host a Peterhead side who lost all their League Cup matches without scoring then continued that trend in a 2-0 loss to Airdrie last week. The Bully Wee opened up at 7/4 but sit around the 11/10 mark. If Peterhead’s failure in front of goal continues you might fancy 11/4 on the Clyde win to nil.
In the Premiership both Celtic and Rangers kick-off at 3pm, a rarity these days. Rangers could have one eye on their vital return leg with Royale Union Saint-Gilloise on Wednesday night but should still have enough in their locker to see off newly promoted Kilmarnock although it could take them a while to break the deadlock and No Goal Before 24:00 appeals at 5/6.
Celtic should face a tougher test at Dingwall. Ross County impressed in defeat at Tynecastle last week and are a well-organised side under Malky Mackay. The Hoops huffed and puffed a bit against Aberdeen but there’s no denying their quality and at full strength should take all three points. It’s difficult to find an angle in this one so a BetBuilder might be best route. A Celtic win, Celtic to score 2+ and to take 5+ corners plus a Ross County card pays 4/5.
In the Scottish Championship only Partick Thistle are odds on and even then they’re 10/11. There’s little between most of the sides and draws will be plentiful this season. Perming three from the four fixtures is worth a small investment.
