England’s painful penalty shoot-out defeat to Italy in the Euros is now their only loss in a run of 22 games, making them the most in-form nation in Europe.
Grouped with an Italian side who failed to make the World Cup, Germany, who had a disappointing Euro 2020 by their own standards and Hungary, who are the lowest-ranked of the League A teams, Gareth Southgate’s side will fancy their chances of qualifying for the knock-out stage of the competition and could be a lively punt at 7/1 to lift the trophy.
Tonight they’re in Budapest, returning to the Puskas Arena where they won comfortably by four goals to nil back in September. The Hungarians put up more of a fight when the sides met again in October and left Wembley with a well-earned point. But with much tougher assignments ahead in Group A3 Southgate will know that it’s vital to get off to a winning start.
England are just 4/11 to win, but to do so whilst keeping a clean sheet is appealing at 10/11. The Three Lions have kept 20 clean sheets in 30 matches since the start of 2020 and have conceded more than one just once in that period (a 2-0 loss to Belgium in November 2020).
In the same Group, Roberto Mancini needs to find a solution to Italy‘s current problems quickly. He’s vowed to fix things following a disastrous World Cup qualifying campaign but there would appear to be a lot of work needing to be done after the Azzuri’s 3-0 defeat to Argentina in the Finalissima in midweek.
He’s pinpointed a lack of goals as one of the main issues so it may not be a high-scoring affair against Germany tonight. His 38-man squad boasts just 51 goals between them with 35-year-old defender Leonardo Bonucci accounting for eight of those. Contrast that with the Germans who have scored 158 goals between the 26 of them with evergreen striker Thomas Muller on 43 goals alone.
That firepower could be decisive and 11/8 on a Germany win looks attractive against the struggling Italians.
Elsewhere the ever-improving Luxembourg are favourites to win in Lithuania at 13/10. They’ve not picked up many wins, just five in 22 but they’re more than competitive at this level.

Racing Tips
It’s Derby day and we have some quality racing at Epsom. Saturday’s racing is jam-packed but it’s difficult to get excited with the racing elsewhere as it looks pretty poor so I’ve opted for just selections at the main meeting of Saturday.
