The big kick-off arrives next week but we’re gradually seeing leagues around Europe return to action after a long football-less summer.
Top flights in Austria, Switzerland and Belgium spring in to life this weekend which gives us punters the chance to look beyond Scandanavia and the topsy-turvy Scottish League Cup, which has been a minefield for punters.
It’s the last matchday of the group stages this weekend and there’s still plenty to play for. Falkirk look like they could finally get their act together under John McGlynn this season. A win at home today over Clyde would guarantee top spot and a place in the next round and odds of 5/7 at SBK looks about right. A home win combined with over 1.5 Falkirk goals pays 20/21 on a Bet365 BetBuilder.
St Mirren have had a really disappointing start to the season. Qualification from the group stage is already beyond them after defeats to Arbroath and Airdrieonians and Stephen Robinson will be under increased pressure if they don’t win today at home to FC Edinburgh. The League One side still have a chance to qualify themselves but you have to fancy the top flight side to finish the group stages on a positive note.
The Buddies are just 2/5 to win but 5/6 on the half-time/full-time market looks more appealing. Double a St Mirren win with a Falkirk win pays 11/10.
Hamilton and Queen’s Park will battle it out for second place in Group H. The Spiders will be aiming to make their mark in the Championship this season and would make statement if they could sneak a place in the last 16 of the League Cup. Both they and their hosts sit on six points having won their matches against Stranraer and Forfar but lost to Dundee so this one could go either way. That means Queen’s Park could be a wee bit of value at 2/1.
We should also try to find a way to get on board with Irish League-leaders Shamrock Rovers. They endured a tough trip to Hungary in midweek where they lost 3-0 to Ludogorets, a result that looks likely to have put the tie beyond them already, but they re-establish a nine-point lead at the summit with a win over Drogheda.
Again they’re very short at just 1/6 so a creative BetBuilder is required; Rovers win, Rovers to score 1+ in the first half, Rovers over 1.5 match goals & Drogheda under 1.5 Goals pays 4/5.
In Norway Bodo/Glimt should score a few against Jerv but it’s tough to find some value. Even backing Glimt to score 3+ pays just 1/2, so backing them to win both halves at 1/1 could be the best option but recent form has been concerning, especially off the back of a midweek defeat to Linfield.
Also in Eliteserien, David Weatherston fancies Rosenborg to triumph at home to Tromso on this week’s Gambla Podcast. They can still be backed at 20/21 with SBK and that looks solid based on their good home form which sees them remain unbeaten (W4 D2).
