Nothing beats Derby Day in the football calendar and for fans in Glasgow, Liverpool and Milan, bragging rights, as well as three points are at stake today.
In Scotland, Celtic will be hoping to turn their two-point lead in to five points this lunch-time at Celtic Park. The Hoops go in to the game on a 37-match unbeaten run in the Premiership and have scored 25 goals in six games in all competitions.
Rangers are in decent shape too, most notably securing a place in the Champions League, but a 2-2 draw, when down to nine men at Hibs, sees them trail the champions.
Although nothing will be decided today as far as the title goes, the Gers will be desperate not to fall any further behind to a relentless-looking Celtic side, but the bookies make Ange Postecoglou’s men firm favourites at 17/20 whilst the visitors are around the 3/1 mark.
No-one has been able to contain Celtic yet this season but Rangers’ European know-how means they’re well equipped to put up some resistance to the Bhoys’ array of attacking talents. Whether they can do so for a full 90 minutes remains to be seen but you can have 5/6 (bet365) that we won’t see a goal inside 27:00 minutes.
This will be Nick Walsh’s first time in charge of this fixture. He’s dished out 5 red cards and 27 yellows in 8 games so far this season. Last season he also brandished 10 reds in 41 so he’s not shy of reaching for his top pocket. It’s 5/2 for a red today.
Callum McGregor was the last man sent off in this fixture and he’s 15/8 to go in to the book today. John Lundstrum looks the best bet for the Gers to pick up a yellow. Combining both pays 6/1.
Celtic first half corner have been good for punter under Postecoglou and although the opponents are of a high calibre today it’s hard to ignore the 7/5 on getting four or more in game in which they’ll probably see a lot of the ball.
On balance Celtic look most likely to come out on top and won’t be without their backers at 17/20, nor the slightly better 4/5 to score two or more.
On Merseyside, Liverpool have the chance to move up to third in the table, which, considering their start to the season, would be no mean feat.
Despite being at home, Everton are 7/1 to take all three points but it’s been 12 league games since they won this fixture at Goodison. It’s hard to make a case for them to do so today. The Toffees performed a great escape to avoid relegation last season and after a winless start to the season this time around Frank Lampard, if he hangs around, may have to perform the Harry Houdini act once more.
It took a late, late goal to secure the points for the Reds at home to Newcastle in midweek, bring a dose of reality back to Anfield after the 9-0 win over Bournemouth. Things still aren’t quite click but they should be too strong for Everton today.
That said, the Toffees will put up a good fight and it could be a close one. In 2022, all six of Everton’s Premier League defeats at Goodison Park have been by a single-goal margin and it’s 11/4 for Liverpool to nick it by a goal this lunchtime.
Newcastle need to start converting draws in to wins. They’ll have been devasted to leave Anfield with nothing in midweek but can pick things up at home against Crystal Palace, especially if Allan Saint-Maximin returns to the side. New signing Alexander Isak looks an exciting prospect and could be good foil for Saint-Maximin. Take your pick between a Newcastle win at 21/20 or tow or more goals for the Magpies at 6/5.
In the bookings market Kieren Tripper looks over-priced to pick up a yellow. Booked twice in his last three Premier League outings he’s up against the league’s most fouled player, Wilfried Zaha, who’s direct opponent, Aaron Hickey, was booked yet again in midweek. 11/2 for a Trippier card is worth a go.
It would be remiss not to mention the 15/2 available on a third Erling Haaland hat-trick for Man City at Aston Villa. For big hitters, the 8/15 on him to have two or more shots on target looks a steal.
Back to Scotland and the draws look a good bet in the Championship again. Try perming any 3, 4 and all 5 to finish all-square and in League One keep backign against struggling Peterhead. Montrose are the visitors today.
