Newmarket trainer Charlie Appleby has a 32 per cent strike-rate with juveniles on the July course in the last five seasons and victory for Silk Romance should improve that record.

The Shamardal filly did everything wrong on her debut in a 7f fillies’ novice event at Kempton two weeks ago. She was slowly away and hung right under pressure but powered home to finish second behind the John and Thady Gosden-trained Tinderbox, who takes her chance in the Group 3 Prestige Stakes at Goodwood on Saturday. There is nothing of that quality in this line up and Silk Romance should be difficult to beat if she improves on her debut effort..

1.45 Newmarket – MansionBet Bet £10 Get £20 Fillies’ Handicap

This is an open handicap but Vanitas could be the answer. The David O’Meara-trained three-year-old is only 3lb higher than when landing a 6f handicap at Pontefract in June and she ran well on her return to this 7f trip at Thirsk last time, finishing only a length and a quarter behind the winner in fourth. Her first win came over this trip at Lingfield in December and she remains open to plenty of further improvement at what looks her optimum distance.

2.20 Newmarket – MansionBet Watch And Bet British EBF Novice Stakes

There are some promising newcomers in this novice event but they will have to be smart to beat Razzle Dazzle, who made an eye-catching debut over course and distance this month.

The Richard Hannon-trained son of Muhaarar pushed odds-on favourite Hafit all the way in that newcomers event and the front pair pulled three and a half lengths clear of a subsequent winner in third. Razzle Dazzle is from a yard who usually bring their youngsters along slowly and there should be plenty of improvement to come. He is the nap of the day.

2.55 Newmarket – MansionBet Best Odds Guaranteed Handicap

The topweight Zagato looks the one to beat here. He was impressive when winning a mile novice at Thirsk in June in a good time and may have found the opposition too hot when upped from Class 5 to Class 2 company at Newbury last time, finishing last of four. This Class 4 event looks more his level and Zagato has dropped 1lb for that latest effort.

3.30 Newmarket – MansionBet Beaten By A Head Handicap

A tough handicap and all five appear to have some sort of chance. Maybe Fabilis is the one to be on. The Frankel filly pulled clear of the third when chasing home subsequent Group 3 winner Passion And Glory at Ascot last month and she didn’t get a clear run when sixth in a hot handicap at Glorious Goodwood last time. This small-field event is an easier assignment.

4.00 Newmarket – Follow @MansionBet On Twitter Fillies’ Handicap

The nine remaining runners include four last-time-out winners, the pick of them perhaps is the steadily progressive top-weight Atavique, whose form is working out well. She finished just in front of Millie Miglia at Leicester in July, but Clive Cox’s lightly raced three-year-old is improving with every run and is fancied to turn the tables on similar terms. The hat-trick-seeking First Dance is third choice.

4.30 Newmarket – MansionBet At Newmarket Handicap

Cairn Gorm has some good form over course and distance. He split five subsequent winners when fifth in a hot handicap at the July meeting last month and his third here next time also came in a strong race from which the fifth and sixth have won four races between them since. Cairn Gorm was again behind a subsequent winner when a close sixth in the Shergar Cup Sprint at Ascot last time and the return to this venue will definitely suit. He has sound claims.
