The international break means only four matches will be taking place in League One on Saturday, but both Plymouth and Wycombe could end the weekend at the top of the standings.
Plymouth finished last season down in 18th place, but Ryan Lowe’s side look set for a promotion charge this term and they should end Saturday at the League One summit if they claim victory over Burton Albion at Home Park.
Wycombe sit level with Plymouth on 20 points, but their goal difference is not as strong as the Pilgrims, which means they realistically must win at home to Gillingham and hope their rivals slip up if they want to claim first place, which is currently held by Wigan, who are not in action this weekend.
Plymouth Protecting Division’s Longest Unbeaten Run
Plymouth are currently on the longest unbeaten run in League One, as they have not lost since the opening day of the season, a sequence that stretches 10 matches, while they have also yet to lose on home soil this term.
Opponents Burton also started the season strongly, but that will feel like a distant memory for Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink’s side now as they have won just once in 10 matches across all competitions.
The form guide certainly suggests that Plymouth should win this match, with a home victory available at 5/4, but it is worth noting that four of the last six meetings have ended all-square, which could make the draw the value option at 12/5.
Wycombe Flawless on Home Soil
Any concerns Wycombe boss Gareth Ainsworth may have had of a relegation hangover from last season have been put to bed, with the Chairboys currently sitting fifth in the standings and having won all four of their matches on home soil to date in League One.
That perfect record at Adams Park will be put on the line when Gillingham come to town on Saturday, but the Gills have only won once in six matches on the road this season, with Steve Evans’ side struggling for consistency.
Wycombe should win this match and are available at 5/8, but given the hosts are without a cleansheet in six matches across all competitions, backing them to win and both teams to score at 51/20 could be the way to go.
Big Hitters Meet at Hillsborough
Sheffield Wednesday and Bolton are two of the bigger names in League One, with both boasting previous Premier League pedigree.
It is the Trotters, fresh from last season’s promotion that are currently fairing the better of the two, as they have won three games on the spin across all competitions, scoring 10 goals in the process, while another victory on Saturday would lift them into the playoff places.
Bolton also boast an impressive away record, as no side has picked up more points on the road than Ian Evatt’s team this season and they will fancy their chances of delivering against mid-table Wednesday, who have won just one of their last six games in League One.
The Owls were beaten on home soil by Oxford last weekend and it could be another uncomfortable afternoon for Darren Moore and his side on Saturday, with a Bolton win looking tempting at 2/1.
Improving Ipswich Set for Three Points
Ipswich were being touted as promotion contenders at the start of the season and they appear to be finally getting their act together after a slow start, notwithstanding last weekend’s defeat at Accrington.
That loss to Stanley was only Ipswich’s second in seven League One matches, while they thrashed bottom club Doncaster 6-0 in their most recent fixture at Portman Road.
Further success could well be on the cards for Paul Cook’s side on Saturday when they host another of the division’s struggling sides in Shrewsbury, who have taken just one point and scored two goals from their five away fixtures to date this term.
Saturday’s hosts are also unbeaten in their last 10 meetings with the Shrews, winning seven of those games, and they are priced at 5/6 to add another victory to that record this weekend.
