It’s day one of Newmarket’s Cambridgeshire Meeting on Thursday with an eight-race card at Headquarters from 1.15pm-5.20pm.

1.15 – Rossdales EBF Stallions Maiden Stakes (7f)
TOROMONA sets the standard here having played second fiddle to a smart rival in Maximal on debut at Sandown 13 days ago. He couldn’t match the winner but held off the remainder and, with improvement likely, this regally bred colt should go one better at a track where his trainer/jockey combination boast exceptional credentials. Royal Champion headlines the debutants while improvement is also likely from Albert Camus, who has a length-and-a-half to find with the selection.

1.50 – Bentley Motors Nursery (1m)
Last Sunset has done nothing wrong in twice finishing second against promising rivals since a winning debut at Kempton on the all-weather over 7f in July and she’s got every chance here but might do well to best LOST IN SPACE. John Gosden’s colt was impressive over 7f on the July Course here last time, pulling right away with a next-time-out winner, and may defy the assessor.

2.25 – British Stallion Studs EBF Premier Fillies’ Handicap (6f)
The consistency of GALE FORCE MAYA is hugely admirable. She hasn’t tasted success since a Carlisle hat-trick last summer but continues to run with huge credit in defeat. Michael Dods’ filly has only been out of the money three times in 13 starts and has been second in recent runs at Thirsk (7f) and Pontefract (6f). From an unchanged mark she should go well.

3.00 – Tattersalls Stakes (Group 3, 7f)
Charlie Appleby’s impressive debut winner La Barrosa is hard to escape here after looking strong at Ascot early this month. The 750,000 gns purchase has room for plenty of improvement and will be hard to topple. QAADER was second in the Coventry Stakes at Royal Ascot in June and, though things haven’t gone his way in two Group 2 runs since, this longer trip might eke out some improvement and he could give the odds-on jolly something to worry about.

3.35 – Jockey Club Rose Bowl Stakes (Listed, 2m)
This has fallen apart a bit with Sleeping Lion and Who What When ruled out. Withhold should hold Ranch Hand on their recent Salisbury clash but MILDENBERGER may trump both of them. Last spotted chasing home stablemate Nayef Road in the Group 3 Sagaro Stakes on Newcastle’s Tapeta in June over an extended two miles, he goes well fresh and has some very smart form in the book since the middle of 2019.

4.10 – Federation Of Bloodstock Agents Handicap (1m4f)
Grand Bazaar is the one to fear on ratings but he was disappointing last time at Ascot and, despite the belief that this smaller field and quicker ground should be positives, he’s short enough in the betting. HAWRIDGE FLYER goes well at Newmarket and is suited by this distance. A step up to 1m6f combined with a seven-day turnaround may have contributed to his poor showing at Haydock last time and he’s marginally preferred at the prices.

4.45 – Bentley Motors Handicap (1m)
King Ragnar and FIRST WINTER could be the pair to focus on in this mile handicap. Roger Varian’s challenger is respected but Charlie Appleby and William Buick do ever so well here. He made every yard at Sandown last month having dropped back to this distance, hanging on gamely in a bunched finish. That form has been well advertised since and a 3lb rise looks lenient.

5.20 – Newmarket Challenge Whip Handicap (1m2f)
Back-to-back wins at Beverley have been impressive from Bottom Bay. He’s undergone a wind op and is 3lb higher now but commands plenty of respect. ZORAN was a bit unlucky over further at Windsor recently and, dropped in distance with scope for further improvement, he can make the most of the 7lb he gets.
