An open stayers contest to begin proceedings and one in which three-time C&D winner MANJAAM could figure on first start since leaving Mark Loughnane. He wasn’t beat far here in November in a stronger event than this one and the dawdling pace at Chelmsford since wouldn’t have suited him. He’s back on a winning mark and has Oliver Stammers claiming 3lb. Twice a winner here early last year, he could flourish if the change of scenery has had a positive effect.

3.30 – Betway Classified Stakes (1m4½f)
Selecto was a 40/1 winner over 1m2f here before Christmas, breaking his duck at the 23rd attempt. He has his chance if in the same mood, while Reset Button followed up a November win at Wolverhampton with a good Lingfield second 17 days ago and is right there on form. VISITANT is a previous C&D winner (2018) and he shaped as if he’d come on for the run at Southwell last month after three months out. This is a good spot for him to potentially do that.

4.00 – MansionBet Proud Partners Of AWC Novice Stakes (1m)
TYRRHENIAN SEA made a winning debut over C&D last month and looked potentially useful in doing so for the Roger Varian team. Third home White Willow went close back here over Christmas and despite a penalty, Marco Ghiani’s mount can follow up – with exposed Broomy Law looking the main danger returned to novice company having undergone a wind operation.

4.30 – MansionBet Beaten By A Head Classified Stakes (1m)
Having shown little on turf, Magic Gem was a very close third on AW/handicap bow over C&D in October and will have a solid chance if building on that now in a first-time visor. The mare STAND FREE gained her only win over this track and trip and is potentially going to shine back here after an improved showing last time at Southwell over further. She is 7lb below that win-mark.

Star Shield and Darwell Lion have solid form claims on the best of their recent efforts but IMPERIAL COMMAND was runner-up over C&D at the start of December behind a convincing winner and might not have been suited with how the race was run since at Kempton. From an unchanged mark the War Command gelding should make a bid.

5.30 – Play 4 To Win At Betway Handicap Division 1 (6f)
The filly SEEKING PERFECTION showed her best form since joining Frank Bishop in finishing fifth of 12 at Wolverhampton over this trip three days before Christmas. She won as a novice over C&D last February on only her second start but failed to make any progress having been allotted a mark of 70. She has the ability to win a race from this lowly rating.

6.00 – Play 4 To Win At Betway Handicap Division 1 (6f)
Phil Kirby’s FIRCOMBE HALL wasn’t out of the first three in a trio of runs over C&D to bring the curtain down on 2021 here, including a slender late-November success from a mark 1lb lower than this one. In an open second division of this event, Graham Lee’s mount seems as likely as any to get involved.

6.30 – Read Katie Walsh On Betway Insider Handicap (6f)
Whittle Le Woods has won 2-3 all-weather starts previously and is now with Mick Appleby so it’s likely he can go well in this contest. It’s been a long wait between drinks for TOMMY TAYLOR – winless since 2017 – but Grant Tuer’s 8YO wasn’t beaten far in a four-runner Class 3 event here over 7f in December. A Listed winner at York on the turf at his peak, his dipping handicap mark makes him of interest now lowered to Class 5 fare.
