WE all heralded the start of the new season and the opening Betfred Cup ties but nothing much went to plan.
Hibs let down a lot of people as they were held 1-1 at Stirling. That included myself, Greg and Scott with his members bet treble.
Early games are not much more than glorified friendlies but this was still a shock result even if Hibs played a weakened team.
Overall I lost 6pts on the cup ties and in hindsight that was probably risking too much but hopefully get some back in the midweek matches.
My golf tipping was better with my Scottish Open twoballs treble winning at 16-5 thanks to Rory McIlroy, Bernd Wiesberger and Erik van Rooyen. I’ll have another treble for the final round but haven’t seen full odds yet.
At first glance I like Adrian Otaegui to beat Lorenzo Gagli and Rafa Cabrera Bello to beat Benjamin Hebert but my picks will probably come from the late starters.
On Sunday there is another Betfred Cuo tie between St Mirren and Dunfermline with new Saints boss Jim Goodwin hoping to get off to a good start.
Elsewhere we’ve reached the semi-final stage at the African Cup of Nations with Senegal facing Tunisia and Algeria meeting Nigeria. Senegal, with Sadio Mane starring, will be tough to stop while Algeria should be too good for their opponents.
Plenty of games in Scandinavia and plan to have a look at those as well friendlies including Rangers v Marseille so might put up a double or treble in the morning.
The Cricket World Cup Final between England and New Zealand at Lord’s will involve two nations who have already lost six times between them in the tournament and here are some thoughts from BetVictor‘s Charlie McCann.
He says: “England have already won three ‘win or go home’ games against India, New Zealand and Australia and their performance against the Baggy Greens in the semi-final in Birmingham on Thursday was close to perfection.
“England are 1-3 at BetVictor to lift the trophy with New Zealand 12-5. The Black Caps are likely to find England’s batting line-up a tough proposition even if they do pick up early wickets.
“Skipper Kane Williamson has best technique and gets the vote at 2-1 for the Kiwis highest run scorer.
“Jason Roy didn’t cover himself in glory when refusing to leave the wicket when given out in the semi-final but I hope the Surrey opener continues his rich vein of form. Back him for top England batsman at 3-1.
“A new name will be on the trophy on Sunday and that name will be England.”
