IT’S a Tunnock’s takeover this weekend with the Challenge Cup the only show in town.
Sweet for bookies but crumbs say punters. Most of these games are tough to call and you have to factor in who actually wants to go all the way.
There are three all-Scottish ties today while the others feature Welsh and Irish outfits.
Inverness and Alloa meet and they’re clubs who look like they do fancy a run.
The Championship rivals haven’t played this season but in the last campaign it was 3-2 and 2-2 in the Highlands so both to score should be the call at 7-10 with sportingbet.
John Robertson’s home men are 1-2 to win at McBookie and I’d have been confident if they hadn’t lost in front of their home fans last time out against Partick Thistle while the Wasps followed a 1-1 draw at Dunfermline by beating Dundee United at home.
League One Airdrie look not bad at 13-20 with McBookie at home to League Two Elgin while I fancy Arbroath at 3-5 with Sky Bet.
The Gayfield side have performed better than expected in the Championship but three defeats in a row against Dundee, Ayr and Dundee United have set them back. Clyde aren’t in their class so back the home.
I’m not sure how Ian McCall will approach Partick Thistle v Connah’s Quay. On one hand he’ll want to look at some of his fringe players but on the other he’ll be after a win to make mends for last week’s shock defeat at home to Queen of the South.
The Welsh treat this tournament fairly seriously but rested players in the last round against Cove and I expect them to do the same again.
If the Jags go fairly strong they should win at 8-11 with McBookie but best bet could be both to score as it’s landed in Connah’s previous four. That pays 7-10 at William Hill.
St Mirren Under-20s are the only Colts team remaining and they face a long trip to Wrexham.
The Welsh are one of the sides who don’t want to be here but beat Ayr on penalties in the last round with a weakened team. It’s asking a lot of the youngsters to return across the border with a win but Wrexham are well short at 2-13 with McBookie.
Finally, Glenavon are unlikely to enjoy their trip to Kirkcaldy having lost all five away games in the Northern Irish Premiership, conceding 21 goals.
Their last two road trips have ended in 6-0 and 7-0 defeats at Larne and Linfield respectively while Raith are unbeaten in five after recovering from 2-0 down to draw with Falkirk last week.
Raith, assuming they don’t make too many changes, should win this and are 11-10 at boylesports to do so.
Down south we only have League One and League Two sides to look at so slim pickings this weekend.
Oxford are one of the most improved sides and should make it six unbeaten at home to Doncaster. They are 11-10 with Betfred.
Portsmouth are sitting a bit off the pace but remain unbeaten at home and face a Gillingham side with just two points on the road. You can have 8-11 at boylesports on the home.
Peterborough are 19-20 at Betfred to make it four wins in a row when Lincoln visit.
In League Two I like on-form Crewe at 23-20 away to Steven Pressley’s Carlisle.
