A nine-point (and 20-goal) deficit means the pressure is all on Rangers this lunchtime when Celtic make the short trip across the city for the 432nd Glasgow Derby.
The money has all been for Celtic ahead of this one, who have been shortened to 11/10 (from 13/10) at Bet365 whilst Rangers have been on the drift to 23/10 (from 2/1).
On paper, both sides appear to be heading in to the clash in good form. Celtic have won 18 of 19 this season. They picked up where they left off following the World Cup break and turned in a fine display in a 4-0 win at Easter Road on Wednesday. Rangers have won four out of four under new boss Michael Beale – but will need to produce their best performance under the Englishman if they’re to prevail today.
There’s no doubt Celtic deserve to be favourites this lunchtime but anything can happen in these games. John Beaton is the man in the middle and he’s dished out five red cards in nine domestic matches this season. Skybet go 5/2 for a player to be sent off.
Callum McGregor was the last man to be sent off in this fixture, seven games ago so we’re probably due one.
McGregor is 7/4 to pick up a card and the Celtic captain is as good a candidate as any in the midfield battle – he’s been booked in two of the last five meetings. John Lundstrum is one of Rangers most likely to be booked at 8/5.
On the goalscorer front, Kyogo Furuhashi will be aiming to break his duck in this fixture. He’s 11/10 to score but his fellow countrymen Daizen Maeda (5/4) and Reo Hatate, in particular at 11/4, are good options.
For Rangers James Tavernier always represents good value given his success rate from the spot. The Gers’ captain already has seven goals this season and is 5/6 to have a shot on target in the game.
The Edinburgh Derby provides a tasty encore to the Glasgow version at 3pm. Hibs boss Lee Johnson could be in a bit of trouble if his side fail to take anything from their visit to Tynecastle. It’s now just two wins in 10 for the Hibees and of their 23 points won, 16 of those have been gained against 10 men.
Hearts on the other hand are starting to motor. The distraction of European football is long gone and in Lawrence Shankland have one of the in-form strikers in the league. The Scottish internationalist has scored 15 for the Jambos this season, including eight from the spot.
Robbie Neilson’s side have the chance to put a bit of daylight between themselves in third place and the chasing pack and look terrific value at 23/20.
Elsewhere, Kilmarnock‘s best work has been done on the astroturf at Rugby Park and can claim all three points against a St Mirren side who’ve won just four of 21 points away from home. Play it a bit safer by backing Killie in the Draw No Bet market at 5/6.
In the Championship Dundee look a good thing at home to Arbroath. The Dens Park side have found some great form and have won seven in row. Today’s visitors are starting to get a bit detached at the bottom of the table alongside Hamilton and the highs of last season, when they challenged for the title, feel like a distant memory.
Dundee will be one for the big-hitters at 1/2 but you can get a bit more vlaue by adding them to score two or more, making up a BetBuilder at 5/6.
Goals should be on the menu in the other Glasgow Derby today when Queen’s Park meet Partick Thistle. Just three points separate the sides and Queen’s Park have had the upper hand in the two clashes so far this season, both of those have seen Over 3.5 goals scored.
The Spiders have been rattling in the goals of late, scoring 13 in their last three and Thistle have scored 14 in their last four league games. Over 2.5 Goals pays 8/13 so should be good for those goals accas. Double it up with goals in tonight’s Premier League bout between Brentford and Liverpool.
