Monday Night Football sees the Sky Sports cameras at the Stadium of Light for the Championship contest between Sunderland and West Brom.
The break for the World Cup came at the wrong time for the Baggies who had put together their best run of form of the season. Three wins without conceding have lifted them off the foot of the table and a win tonight would see them rise to 17th in the table – as high as they’ve been since the beginning of September.
But a trip to Wearside is never easy and with Sunderland themselves in good form before and after the break the home support will be expecting another three home points. A rousing second-half performance secured a win over Millwall last weekend and the Black Cats could move in to the play-off places with a win.
Despite being near the bottom of the pile, West Brom’s corner stats make for fascinating reading. They average the most corners in the division at 7.05 per game, they also average the lowest number of corners conceded at just 3.45 per game. Sunderland concede the second highest number of corners at home, 5.60 per match.
As you’d expect, West Brom’s stats are skewed as a result of their perfomances home and away. On the road the corner count averages a less impressive 4.67 per game.
The bookies aren’t taking and chances though and have West Brom favourites to win the corner count at just 8/11. There’s little value in that, nor the even money on the Baggies to hit six or more corners.
Sunderland somehow managed just one corner in their 3-0 win over Millwall but the value could be to opposing the market and backing THEM to win the corner count for a small interest at 7/5.
In a game that looks difficult to call that might be the best angle of attack but if you’re looking for more inspiration then check out Gabriel’s preview of the big match.
Over in Qatar the countdown is on to the semi-finals. Three continents will be represented in the final four for the first time and we could see a new name on the trophy for the first time since 2010.
A repeat of the 2018 final could be on the cards if Croatia can get the better of Argentina on Tuesday. Incredibly, despite also being finalists in Russia, the Croations haven’t won any of their last five knock-out matches at the World Cup inside 90 minutes. Four have gone to penalties, the other victory was secured in extra-time against England. Argentina, be warned!
Morocco could have their eyes on a shoot-out victory over France too. The Atlas Lions have yet to concede to an opposition player so far, the only goal they’ve lost was an own goal v Canada – quite a remarkable record when you consider the quality of opposition they’ve faced; Portugal, Spain, Belgium and Croatia.
The latest odds to qualify for the final are; Argentina 4/11 versus Croatia 11/5 and France 2/9 versus Morocco 10/3.
