Most football fans will be glad to see the back of January. Winter breaks, postponements, depleted squads and international call-ups have made it a stop-start kind of month and a tricky one for punters too.
Portsmouth v Charlton being the Monday’s match of the day feels like a fitting end to a month of January Blues.
Both clubs have seen better days but now can’t escape League One and even the play-offs look a tad ambitious for each of them. Pompey are in the better position of the two but they’re 11 points off sixth-place although they do have a couple of games in hand over most teams above them.
Charlton are one of a cluster of clubs who could still be sucked in to a basement battle. They sit six places off the relegation zone but only five points from safety but steadied the ship with a 2-0 win over Fleetwood last time out.

The highlight of the day is probably the closing of the transfer window. Sky Sports will indulge in their usual hyped-up nonsense and there’s no shortage of betting markets that the bookies will take some money on.
Mega-rich Newcastle are expected to be the big movers as they attempt to buy their way to safety and avoid the ignominy of relegation. Having already signed Chris Wood, Kieran Trippier and Bruno Guimaraes the Toon are 4/7 with Skybet to sign Over 5.5 players in the January window!
On a similar vein, the same firm have enhanced Newcastle to get 40+ points to 9/2 (from 7/2). Eddie Howe’s side need 25 points from 17 games to reach the 40 point mark. One man who could be helping them to reach that tally is Jesse Lingard. The 29-year-old (yes 29!) is looking for a way out of Manchester United and Newcastle is his most likely next destination at 4/6.
Other big names that could be on the move are Ousmane Dembele who is 4/6 to move PSG, Dele Alli, who is out-of-favour at Spurs and 3/1 to move to Everton.
Later in the week we’ve a massive round of fixtures from the Scottish Premiership to look forward to with derbies in Edinburgh, Dundee and Glasgow.
An early look at some of the prices suggests there could be a of value about Hearts when they visit Hibs on Tuesday. The Hibees lost to Livingston at the weekend and with Martin Boyle now gone they could struggle to breech the Jambo’s defence. Hearts look in goo shape for the rest of the season and although the old ‘form goes out the window in derby’ cliche the 7/4 on an away win is tempting.
Livi at 6/5 is also of interest at home to St Johnstone. They’ve been in decent form of late and the Saints simply have to be opposed in almost every match at the moment.
It could pay to grab some of those early prices before they’re gone.
