Italy and Wales became the first teams to book their place in the last 16 of Euro 2020 on Sunday following a 1-0 win for the Azzuri in Rome.
Switzerland will have to wait for now to see if they’ll be one of the four third-placed teams to qualify for the knock-out stages. but they stand a good chance after accumulating four points from their three group A games.
It all gets a little complicated so we’ve put together a handy guide as to which third placed teams will qualify and who they’ll play in the last 16.
On Monday we’ll find out who else will line up in the last 16 as winners and runners-up of Groups B and C.
Roberto Martinez may have been tempted to rest some of his star names given his Belgian side are already in to the next round but he’s said that Eden Hazard, Axel Witsel and the influential Kevin de Bruyne will all start on Monday so punters can bet with a bit more confidence even if the Red Devils are just 1/3 to beat Finland. Any one of the other three sides can still qualify from Group B. Plenty of neutrals will be behind Denmark after their campaign was derailed by Christian Eriksen’s collapse against Finland. Only a win will do for the Danes in Copenhagen against Russia so their mission is pretty clear. Despite being pointless Denmark could still finish in second place if things go their way in both games. KevMac details his best bets for the crunch game in Group B.
Things are similarly poised in Group B where the Netherlands have already qualified. A minor miracle is required for North Macedonia to qualify. They’d need to beat the Dutch and hope they can be one of the best third-placed teams on just three points.
The other match is likely to be a straight shoot-out for second place between Ukraine and Austria. With both teams tied on level points and goal difference the Ukrainians hold the upper hand at the moment by virtue of having scored four goals to Asutria’s three so a draw will suffice for them to finish second.
A draw should also be enough for Austria too. That would see them finish third with four points and a zero goal difference and they’d only need two other teams to have a poorer record in third place to qualify.
Despite both teams claiming they’ll go out to win the match bookies are taking no chances and the draw is odds-on in most places as memories of the “Disgrace of Gijón” come back to mind. Also mockingly known as the “Gijón Non-Aggression Pact” a 1-0 win for West Germany over Austria would’ve been enough for both sides to qualify in World Cup 1982 and of course that’s how it ended. That should be enough to scare most punters off the outright betting markets in this one.
