IT’S the long-awaited return of the Scottish League season on Saturday and Mark Walker is back with his best three bets for the weekend.
Dundee v St Mirren
ST MIRREN can get their season off to a flier today when they travel to face newly-promoted Dundee at Dens Park.
Jim Goodwin’s side came agonisingly close to grabbing a top six spot last season and have lofty ambitions again this season. Yet, they are outsiders at 17/10 – having already been slashed from 2/1 – when they face James McPake’s team in Tayside.
Dundee deservedly won the play-offs last season with home and away wins against Kilmarnock, but their squad still looks a little on the thin side for the rigours of the top flight and they’ve not really done anything of huge note in the transfer market.
St Mirren have managed to keep influential star Jamie McGrath for now anyway and they should have too much for Dundee on day one of the season.
Both sides won the games they actually played and weren’t handed by forfeit in the Premier Sports Cup, but the Paisley side arguably should be favourites for this.
Morton v Dunfermline
DUNFERMLINE should be real dark horses in the Championship this season and can show their credentials with a win at Morton.
An East End Park takeover seems to have injected a fair bit of cash for new players at the Pars and the likes of Graham Dorrans and Kai Kennedy, among plenty others, should add a fair chunk of quality.
They face a Morton side who seem to be very light on players this season – they’ve signed four and lost 15. They did draw at Kilmarnock and beat Clyde in the Premier Sports Cup, but were held at home by Lowland League side East Kilbride.
Dunfermline scored 13 goals in three games in the same competition, although they did lose at Premiership St Mirren.
And Peter Grant’s boys look very backable at Cappielow at 6/5, after they too were backed this week.
East Fife v Queen’s Park
QUEEN’S PARK can also get their season off to a good start by winning at East Fife in League One at 21/20.
The former amateurs have actually been surprisingly quiet in the transfer market this season with no marquee signings unlike last season when Lord Willie Haughey injected cash into them.
But they have a very settled squad who should be able to launch a push for promotion this season.
The Methil side had a very poor League Cup campaign where they lost all four of their games and could really struggle in this league this season.
And the Spiders can add to their gloom at New Bayview.
