With an entire year of League of Legends esports almost behind us, we’re left with just two sides. From the Chinese LPL, we have Suning Gaming, who beat fellow LPL side TOP Esports. Over on the other side, we have LCK side, DAMWON, who beat European hopefuls G2 Esports in the semi-finals.
DAMWON Gaming v Suning Gaming
Most people did not expect this matchup when Worlds groups were first drawn. Suning Gaming wasn’t supposed to beat G2 in groups, let alone fellow LPL side TOP Esports in the semi-final. It’s a series that’s hard to call, because on paper the LPL side is the standout favourites, given the standard of the league. However, the semi-final was a strange series, and while Suning came away victorious they looked like a side full of mistakes.
As for DAMWON, they were clinical against G2 Esports, beating the European side 3-1 in all, and even recording the fastest ever Worlds match victory in their fourth game. DAMWON will go into the series with a lot of confidence and will be desperate to claim a Worlds title after not having an LCK representative in the final for the past two years.
DAMWON gaming goes into the series as favourites, given their handling of G2 Esports in the semi-final. For the LCK side it could be the best opportunity for them to bring the Worlds title back to Korea, and doing so on Chinese soil would be all the sweater. The two regions have a long-running rivalry, especially given they’re the only regions to lift a Worlds title (Fnatic won the first season, however, it did not feature all regions. We have DAMWON at 20/51
favourites, though Suning Gaming could be worth a look.
Suning Gaming comes into the series as surprise finalists, and they certainly look the part. Their victory against TOP Esports in the semi-final shocked most in the League of Legends esports community. Suning certainly has the talent to win the series, and they’ll have a point to prove given the fact they’ve spent most of Worlds 2020 being spoken of in a poor light. We have them at 19/10
outsiders, though given how we know they can perform, they might be able to shock the LCK side. If they do manage it, they’ll bring home a third Worlds title in a row and cement the LPL as the best League of Legends region in the world.
