Emma Raducanu and Leylah Fernandez will meet in the final of the Women’s US Open at Flushing Meadows in New York on Saturday.
It’s a final between the 18-year-old British girl Raducanu and the 19-year-old Canadian Fernandez that many see as signalling a changing of the guard in women’s tennis.
Emma Raducanu
Raducanu, born in Toronto, Ontario, Canada, to parents who originate from Bucharest, Romania, and Shenyang, China, moved to England when she was two-years-old.
Ranked 338 in the world, she made the fourth round on her debut as a wildcard at this year’s Wimbledon tournament, a performance that helped her secure a place in the qualifying draw for the US Open.
During qualification, and now ranked 150 in the world, Raducanu beat Bibiane Schoofs, Mariam Bolkvadze and Mayar Sherif, all in straight sets, to ensure progress to the main draw.
Since then, she has gone on to beat Stefanie Voegele, Zhang Shuai, Sara Sorribes Tormo, Shelby Rogers, Belinda Bencic and Maria Sakkari to reach the final, again all without dropping a set in any match.
Leylah Fernandez
Fernandez’s father Jorge is a former footballer from Ecuador, while her mother is a Canadian citizen of Filipino descent (Leylah has a younger sister, Bianca Jolie, who is also a tennis player).
Fernandez made her Grand Slam debut at the Australian Open in 2020 where, after qualifying for the main draw, she went down to a first round defeat to Lauren Davis.
She soon went on to reach her first WTA final at the Mexican Open, where she was defeated by Britain’s Heather Watson.
Fernandez won her first WTA title at the Monterrey Open in March 2021, beating Viktorija Golubic in the final and went through the tournament without dropping a set.
During this year’s US Open, Fernandez has claimed the scalps of three of the top five seeds, including the defending champion, Naomi Osaka, 5–7, 7–6(7–2), 6–4 in the third round.
She also beat former world No. 1 and three-time major champion Angelique Kerber in the fourth round, 4–6, 7–6(7–5), 6–2, fifth seed Elina Svitolina in the quarter-finals, 6–3, 3–6, 7–6(7–5) and second seed Aryna Sabalenka in the semi-finals, 7-6(7-3), 4-6, 6-4.
Raducanu v Fernandez Betting Odds
The Match Result betting sees Raducanu as the favourite at odds of 4/6 with bet365*, with Fernandez at 7/5 with William Hill.
Although Raducanu has been mightily impressive throughout the tournament, the pressure of being a marginal favourite on such an occasion will clearly be new to her. The fact is that her path to the final has been a little easier than that of her opponent and Fernandez has claimed some hugely impressive wins en route to the title showdown.
In Set Betting, Fernandez to win 2-1 is 4/1 with William Hill, while in the Total Games market you can also get odds of 4/5 with BoyleSports on there being Over 21.5 Games.
