League One Promotion Race Hotting Up

03/12/2021 admin

League One is turning into a great battle this season and with just six points separating the top nine teams in the table, the fight for three places in next term’s Championship looks set to go right to the wire.

With more than half of the season left, there are still plenty of points to fight for, so here we take a look at who might be decent value to finish their campaign on a high.

Millers and Latics Are in Great Form

There is a congested look to the top of the table, but the two teams who stand out at this stage are Rotherham and Wigan.

The Millers were relegated last season but they have given themselves an excellent chance of bouncing back as Paul Warne’s team have not been defeated in their last 13 matches.

They are at the top of the table and it is difficult to pick any faults in their performances.

United have taken 13 points from their last five at the New York Stadium – they scored at least three goals in each of their four victories in that run – and they have conceded just one goal in their last six games on the ground.#

Rotherham are 23/20 to win League One and 1/3 to be promoted, but Wigan are hot on their heels.

Since losing at Sunderland on the opening day, the Latics have dropped just two points in eight away games and have scored at least twice in each of those matches.

They lost three straight home games before beating Burton on the last occasion they were in action at the DW Stadium and they are 5/6 to go up and 10/3 to win the league.

Wycombe are the third team on 38 points and will be desperate to bounce back to the Championship after their fans were unable to watch them in their only season outside the bottom two divisions.

They have bounced back well from home defeats to Ipswich and Portsmouth after some strong performances at Adams Park, and a recent 3-0 win at Plymouth will have made a few teams sit up and listen.

The Chairboys are 11/1 to win the league and 9/4 to get promoted.

Sunderland and Ipswich Trying to Live up to Expectations

This is the fourth successive season that Sunderland have been chalked-up as favourites to win the third tier.

Falling to a last-gasp goal to Charlton in the playoff final in 2019 has been the nearest the Black Cats have come to ending their stay and they are 5/1 to win the title this time.

Lee Johnson’s team have three points to make up on the leading trio, but they have been victims of some thumping defeats on the road, losing 4-0 at Portsmouth and 5-1 at Rotherham. They are 11/10 to finally go up.

Ipswich have also had their problems after being highly-fancied at the start of the campaign, but the joint antepost favourites are fighting their way back from winning just one of their opening eight games.

They are 11th and have plenty of ground to make up but they could push on and are 5/1 to win the league.

Oxford Can Get Something at Stadium of Light

New boys Plymouth, managed by Ryan Lowe, have given an excellent account of themselves so far, although they have slipped off the top of the table after consecutive losses to Charlton, Wigan and Wycombe.

However, one team that can force their way into the playoff picture is Oxford United, and they could be worth supporting in one of Saturday’s only two League One games when they visit Sunderland, who we have already seen can be prone to the odd horror show.

Plymouth are the only team to have beaten Karl Robinson’s side in their last ten games and they earned a creditable draw with Rotherham last Saturday.

The Black Cats have taken seven points from their last three matches, but it was not long ago that they lost at home to Charlton and were dumped out of the FA Cup on their own patch by League Two Mansfield.

Oxford are 19/10 to win Saturday’s match and the 23/20 available for them on the draw-no-bet market could be of interest.
