Although Poland didn’t make it easy for the Three Lions last time out, this is arguably England’s toughest test in Group I. Hungary were drawn in the ‘Group of Death’ this summer and they competed admirably throughout. They are particularly tough to beat at the Puskas Arena and this won’t be a straightforward task for Gareth Southgate’s men.
They scored three times here against Poland in their World Cup Qualifier at this stadium and scored five times in their last three Nations League home matches. They have a terrific work ethic and will ask questions of the England defence. As a result, it is worth including BTTS and also 2+ goals in this match. Despite their ability to find the back of the net, Hungary have looked vulnerable at the back and were unpicked by Portugal in the space of five minutes.
Although there were only 20 shots during their 3-3 draw with Poland, Hungary’s games at the Euros were highly watchable contests and there were plenty of efforts on goal throughout the 90 minutes. There were a whopping 27 shots during their 2-2 draw with Germany, however, there were just 16 vs Portugal and 20 vs France. There were also exactly 20 shots against Poland during their 3-3 draw and this one could follow a similar path. It could be close, but under 21.5 goals looks the best option of the pair here.
The majority of Hungary’s games have sprung into life during the dying stages and they led Poland until seven minutes from time in their previous World Cup qualifier. All three of Portugal’s strikes were also netted during the last minutes, and England may have to be patient if the game is level during the second period. Seven of Hungary’s ten goals that they’ve scored during this qualifying period have been netted after the break.
Finally, with Dominic Calvert-Lewin having withdrawn from the squad after picking up an injury at the weekend, this could pave the way for Patrick Bamford. The Leeds striker netted against Burnley at the weekend and with no replacement for DCL having been called up, Southgate is likely to put his faith in the Whites frontman.
