STARE due Southeast across The Humber on a clear day and a keen eye will pick put the dark shadows of a once powerful but long-forgotten town.
This is no ancient Aztec settlement though and the word civilisation could be stretching it – in fact, it’s true that nobody has ever met anyone from Grimsby – it’s almost as if it doesn’t exist, but it does – I’ve been there and lived to tell the tale…
CLEETHORPES TOWN VS. ILKESTON TOWN (3.00pm)
Like it’s twin town of Royston Vasey, the ‘Welcome to Grimsby’ sign is adorned by an additional bit of graffiti that states
‘You will never leave’ but for those locals lucky enough to escape the constant grey skies and stench of fish guts, sanctuary lies just a mile down the road.
If Grimsby is the UK’s armpit then Cleethorpes would be the ingrown hair on a boil within that armpit; where the aroma of fish mixes with candy floss and heroin. In 2017, a devastating storm totally destroyed the town centre causing nearly six pounds worth of damage.
It really is the seaside town that they forgot to close down and the footballing fortunes of the various biggerNorth Lincs sides has reflected the local decline grimly in recent years.
But, this campaign has seen both Cleethorpes Town and Ilkeston Town riding high within the Non-League Division One with the sides occupying 4th and 5th spots respectively and the hosts having a good few games in hand to capitalise on!
