Passionate about NH & Flat Racing. I’m Steve Mullington from Rochdale. My racing blog on Betfinder is about the ups & downs of a regular punter and sports fan. A place to come to share ideas, tips and of course-friendly banter!
New Racing League
There isn’t really a lot to report from the broader world of racing this week other than that the new William Hill Racing League kicked off at Newcastle on Thursday night.
Team Mullington gave it a quick 15 minute watch and that was quite enough for us. Fancy baseball caps were plentiful, basically tarting up what was essentially a bang average all-weather card. Will we watch it this week? – Probably not.
On the “elite” racing front, Glorious Goodwood took place last week, and it undoubtedly makes sense to dissect the results as they happened over the course of the five days.
Tuesday
Angel Bleu finished second at Ascot last Saturday before winning at Goodwood just three days later in the Group 2 Vintage Stakes. The Dewhurst Stakes will be his next target.
Kinross ran out a determined winner of the Lennox Stakes under Rossa Ryan, and gave trainer Ralph Beckett a double on the day after the success of Angel Bleu.
Trueshan duly obliged as the 6/5 favourite after Stradivarius was withdrawn from the Goodwood Cup. It was Hollie Doyle’s second career Group One win and trainer Alan King’s first on the flat.
Wednesday
Last Empire put in a gutsy performance in the Group 3 Whispering Angel Oak Tree Stakes. Kevin Ryan’s mare was handy throughout, holding of the late challenge of Onassis.
The Richard Hannon-trained Armor took the five-furlong Group 3 Molecomb Stakes for juveniles. The Prix Morny or the Flying Childers will be next.
Andrew Balding’s Alcohol Free overcame favourite Poetic Flare to win the Sussex Stakes. The Juddmonte International Stakes at York next month is her next port of call.
Thursday
Alan King is considering the Gimcrack or the Prix Morny next Asymmetric after his Richmond Stakes victory.
Ottoman Emperor gave Johnny Murtagh a first Goodwood Festival success as a trainer in the Group 3 Gordon Stakes, a leading trial for the St Leger at Doncaster in September. Bookmakers now make him an 8/1 chance for the Town Moor showpiece.
Trainer William Jarvis celebrated his first Group One for 27 years when Lady Bowthorpe took top honours in the Group 1 Nassau Stakes. Jarvis is now contemplating the Prix Jean Romanet at Deauville and a potential trip to Hong Kong with his star mare.
Friday
Baaeed routed his rivals in the Group 3 Bonhams Thoroughbred Stakes in what was the easiest victory of the week. Trainer William Haggas would like to run him next in two of the following three races: the Jacques Le Marois, the Celebration Mile and the Prix du Moulin.
Battaash’s bid to win a fifth successive King George Qatar Stakes victory fell by the wayside as French-raider Suesa stormed to a comprehensive win. It was confirmed the day after that Battaash would retire from racing with immediate effect.
The L’Ormarins Queen’s Plate Glorious Stakes was won by Passion And Glory for Oisin Murphy and trainer Saeed bin Suroor.
Saturday
Mr Wagyu won for the fifth time this season when making most of the running to land the Stewards’ Cup consolation race.
Wonderful Tonight extended her winning streak to four with a tidy success in the Group 2 Lillie Langtry Stakes. David Menuisier’s filly may have two more runs before heading to Paris for the Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe, for which she is a well fancied 8/1 shot.
Michael Dods has his sights set on the Ayr Gold Cup with Commanche Falls after the gelding swooped late for victory in the Stewards’ Cup.
Galway Brief
Royal Rendezvous went one better than last year’s second place to claim the Galway Plate last week. The 5/1 favourite was prominent throughout under Paul Townend.
Willie Mullins became the first trainer since Edward O’Grady in 1979 to pocket the Plate and the Hurdle in the same year after his top-weighted Saldier completed the historic two-day double.
Coming up…
This week I will be heading over to Haydock for their three-day Rose Of Lancaster Festival starting on Friday.
On Saturday I shall be backing Extra Elusive to become the first horse ever to win back-to-back renewals of the Rose Of Lancaster Stakes. Watch out for the early betting odds when the ante-post market is formed.
