As I alluded to in last week’s column, the Godolphin legions have been quietly plundering all the big horse racing prizes across the globe in recent weeks and I don’t believe they have quite finished yet.
After tipping up Godolphin’s Royal Marine for last Saturday’s Cambridgeshire Handicap, I did start thinking to myself on the morning of the race “What if one of their other two win? I’m going to be gutted if I’m not on them”.
How often does such a scenario happen? You’re on a stable first string, and the second, third or fourth choice of the stable comes in. You end up being mortified and cursing your rotten luck. So to avoid such a betting beating, I had the race morning (lucky) foresight to stick a few quid on all three of the Godolphin Blues in the Cambridgeshire – Royal Marine, Long Tradition and Bedouin’s Story, and to my absolute disbelief, the latter named horse won at average odds of 60/1 on the Betfair Exchange. All hail Jamie Spencer! Blue Army!
On another personal note I’m away to Paris next weekend to watch the Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe and now I’m even more convinced Godolphin will land the spoils on Sunday, but with which horse you may well ask? I certainly won’t be siding with Hurricane Lane simply because no horse has ever completed the St Leger/Arc double and that one probably left its season back on Town Moor, so it has to be Adayar for me at odds of 11/4.
The Derby winner looks every inch an Arc horse and I can see the three-year-old mowing them all down late with his stamina coming to the fore. Bonne chance!
Newmarket Round Up
As well as the big Cambridgeshire Handicap, Newmarket also saw three Group races take place on Saturday afternoon.
Royal Patronage put himself in next season’s Derby picture after he rallied in spectacular style to win the Royal Lodge Stakes at Newmarket.
The Godolphin-owned Coroebus looked home for all money until the petrol gauge suddenly turned to empty leaving Royal Patronage to gun him down. Both the winner and the runner-up look sure to go onto bigger things next year.
The Aidan O’Brien-trained Tenebrism produced a brilliant performance to come from last to first to win the Cheveley Park Stakes. The daughter of Caravaggio is now an 8/1 chance for the 1000 Guineas with Betfair.
Perfect Power under Christophe Soumillon registered back-to-back Group 1 victories in September when capturing the Middle Park Stakes late in the day. Richard Fahey’s runner was cut to 8/1 second favourite (from 16/1) by Betfair for next year’s 2000 Guineas.
Curragh Round Up
The unbeaten Camelot colt Luxembourg was the runaway victor of the Group 2 Beresford Stakes at the Curragh. Bookmakers went 10/1 about Luxembourg for the 2022 Derby from 20’s following the race.
Dropped to Group 3 level, Art Power was sent off the 4/5 favourite and duly won the Renaissance Stakes in convincing fashion for David Allen and Tim Easterby. Next month’s British Champions Sprint Stakes at Ascot could well be on the cards for him.
French Fancies
There’s 11 Group races taking place at ParisLongchamp next weekend, but in general only five of them have been priced up as of Monday 27th Sept. Here are my early Longchamp betting picks:
