Horse racing really does make an arse of you as a punter sometimes and last Saturday was exactly one of those days when the results really did catch me with my pants down.
After backing the Ontoawinner-owned Show Me Show Me (13th) and Flying Pursuit (15th) in the Ayr Bronze Cup on Friday afternoon, I decided that Staxton and Shallow Hall (both of the same ownership) would not be carrying any of my money in the Silver Cup.
Given the fact that Staxton immediately became a cliff horse of mine after I was lucky enough see him win on debut at 50/1, I couldn’t bring myself to bet on him after his five previous runs.
Lo and behold, Staxton pops up and lands the Silver Cup at 25/1 and instead of being on Tim Easterby’s horses in that particular contest, my money was invested instead on both of his runners in the Gold Cup. Surprise, surprise the pair finish out of the frame and the Gold Cup is won by the Kevin Ryan-trained Bielsa who I just so happened to tip up on his last three runs – BUT NOT ON SATURDAY!!!
So between the Ayr Bronze, Silver & Gold Cups, I really did get a punting kick in the teeth. But as the old adage goes – “You can’t back ‘em all”.
Ayr Round Up
- Maydanny ran out a clear-cut winner of the Listed Doonside Cup.
- 14 juvenile fillies went to post for the Group Three Firth of Clyde Fillies’ Stakes with Hollie Doyle and Nazanin claiming a last-gasp victory.
- Staxton (25/1) clung on doggedly to claim the top spot in the Ayr Silver Cup.
- Jockey Kevin Stott and Bielsa secured big-race honours in the Ayr Gold Cup. Trainer Kevin Ryan was winning the Ayr Gold Cup for a fifth time.
Newbury Round Up
- Hurricane Ivor landed the Group Three World Trophy Stakes at Newbury with his customary late flourish. He may be heading to France next for the Abbaye.
- Sir Michael Stoute’s Solid Stone continued his progression through the ranks by taking the Legacy Cup Stakes. Odds-on favourite Al Aasy folded tamely on his first start since being gelded.
- Callum Shepherd partnered Charlie Fellowes’ colt Injazati to a smooth success in the valuable Free Handicap. He may now sign off for the season in the Old Rowley Cup on October 8th.
- Wings Of War flew home late to win the Mill Reef Stakes. Paddy Power make Clive Cox’ runner a 14/1 chance for next year’s Commonwealth Cup at Royal Ascot.
Coming Up …
The Cambridgeshire Meeting at Newmarket starts on Thursday through to Saturday this week, with the highlight being the Cambridgeshire Handicap on the final afternoon.
Given the way Godolphin runners are performing at the moment, I am going to side with Royal Marine E/W @ 28/1 with bet365*.
This Wednesday sees the Kerry National take place at Listowel and the veteran chaser Modus gets the each-way nod from me at 12/1.
