Boxing superstar Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez returns to the ring this weekend as he looks to add more titles to his impressive collection when facing American Caleb Plant.
Mexico star Alvarez heads back to Las Vegas where he hopes to unify the super-middleweight division by outclassing Plant, who has yet to lose as a professional.
The odds suggest that Plant should come unstuck this weekend and it could be a case of when, not if, Alvarez gets the job done.
Alvarez’s Prediction Could Come True
Since turning professional in 2005, only one man has managed to beat Alvarez. That was Floyd Mayweather Jr, who put on a boxing clinic in their bout back in 2013.
Losing to ‘Money’ Mayweather is no disgrace, though, with the veteran set to enter the Hall of Fame in the coming years after ending his career undefeated.
Even in defeat, Alvarez learned some valuable lessons and he has taken his own skillset to another level in the last five years.
Alvarez has adapted his game plan to become one of the best counter-punchers in the world, but he is expected to take the fight to Plant as he tries to become the first undisputed super-middleweight champion in the four-belt era.
There’s been some “bad blood” between the duo in the build-up, with Alvarez and Plant swinging punches at their pre-fight press conference. Alvarez has vowed to stop Plant inside eight rounds after claiming he made personal insults towards his family.
With that in mind, under 9.5 rounds at 5/6 looks a sensible bet, with Alvarez likely to take control during the middle rounds.
Plant to Go Down Fighting
American Plant has made three successful defences of his IBF title since winning it from Jose Uzcategui in January 2019. Mike Lee, Vincent Feigenbutz and Caleb Truax have all been unable to beat Plant, but they would not last two minutes with Canelo.
Plant is one of America’s best fighters. His fast hands have caused carnage for some of his rivals and he has recorded 12 knockouts during his 21-fight career.
He has given Alvarez no respect in the build-up to this fight and he will look to make life very tough for the Mexican inside the opening few rounds.
Alvarez is good enough to take his time on Saturday night in Las Vegas as he tries to work out the best approach to beat his rival.
The fan favourite is 16/5 to win inside rounds 4-6 and that is tempting, especially when you consider how easily Alvarez beat Billy Joe Saunders, Callum Smith and Avni Yildirim in recent months.
Plant’s best chance of victory is to make a fast start a the MGM Grand, but he could soon find himself on the wrong end of the result as the fight unfolds into the middle rounds.
