Golovkin’s Five Biggest Fights

11/09/2022 admin

Gennady Golovkin is set to get it on with Saul Alvarez for the third time in Las Vegas and there is no better time to look back on the five biggest fights of Triple G’s career.

1 Saul Alvarez (2017)

There was a huge build up and the anticipation levels were at fever pitch ahead of the first clash between Golovkin and Alvarez. Triple G was a three-belt unbeaten middleweight champion and the Kazakhstan man had ripped through the division in devastating fashion.

Alvarez held the WBC middleweight crown and had also defeated Liam Smith to claim the WBO super-welterweight belt.

There was a frenzied atmosphere inside the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas as two of boxing’s best collided.

It was thought by many observers that Triple G had done enough to win the fight and the Kazakhstan puncher certainly landed the bigger shots in the middle rounds of the bout. However, the judges ruled the contest a split-decision draw.

2 Saul Alvarez (2018)

After the controversial scoring of the first contest there was an inevitable call for a rematch. The T-Mobile Arena was once again picked to stage the event and the fight was supposed to settle any arguments.

Canelo was certainly more aggressive than in the first fight, but it was once again a closely-fought contest.

Triple G outlanded the Mexican in eight of the 12 rounds, but perhaps Canelo hit the target with the more eye-catching shots.

Either way, there was little between the two boxers, although Alvarez was awarded a majority-decision victory.

3 David Lemieux (2015)

In 2015 Golovkin got it on with David Lemieux in a middleweight unification contest. Triple G was the WBC and WBA champ, while the Canadian held the IBF strap.

It was a dominant display from the Kazakhstan man, who floored Lemieux in the fifth-round, before stopping him in the eighth. Triple G walked away with three middleweight world titles.

4 Kell Brook (2016)

Britain’s Kelly Brook was the unbeaten IBF welterweight champion when he was offered the chance to move up to middleweight to challenge GGG. The Sheffield star was clearly giving away size and weight advantages, but at the time Special K still had untapped potential.

Brook started the fight well, landing shots on the chin of Golovkin, but Triple G’s strength and power eventually took over.

Special K’s corner threw in the towel in the fifth round and victory went to the Kazakhstan man.

5 Daniel Jacobs (2017)

Daniel Jacobs was a top-level middleweight and a tough fighter. Miracle Man went the full 12 rounds with Golovkin but that doesn’t tell the whole story of Triple G’s performance.

Golovkin had the American down in the fourth round and the Karaganda puncher landed a barrage of shots on Jacobs.

It was another glittering victory from one of boxing’s modern greats.
