The PGA Tour continues this week with the Wyndham Championship at Sedgefield Country Club, Greensboro, North Carolina.
This will be a final chance for those to not only brush up for the FedEx play-offs but also to put themselves in contention for the wildcard berths at the much anticipated Ryder Cup at Whistling Straits next month.
The 156 field will be competing around this short par 70 parkland track for the $6.4m prize money with the winner collecting the title and $ 1.152m.
Jim Herman returns to defend the title he won last year when he beat Billy Horshel by one shot, what made that victory so unexpected was that Herman had not even made the cut at almost every event he entered that year.
The weather is forecast to be very warm with humid conditions and thunderstorms are predicted so expect play to be suspended at anytime throughout the tournament.
This event will be screened on Sky Sports Golf with live coverage starting at 12pm GMT on Thursday.
Last week at the WGC FedEx St Jude I nearly landed another whale for us with my 80/1 EW selection Sam Burns. However it wasn’t to be when he narrowly missed out at the second play-off hole to eventual winner Abraham Ancer, his maiden PGA victory.
Can’t win them all as they say but he did collect anyone who follows my selections 20/1 place money, not only that, with the runners up spot he comfortably finished in the Top 20 which I also advised at 11/4.
To round of yet another amazing and profitable weekend my matchbet Nap of the tournament won easily when Jordan Speith beat Xander Schauffel . Well done to everyone who collected yet again. As always I’m only to glad to have helped this amazing community at MFT.
Hideki Matsuyama
So let’s move on with the selections for the Wyndham Championship. For my first and main selection this week I’m going to single out Hideki Matsuyama 14/1 EW Betfair.
The man from Japan is having an amazing year and it could well continue this weekend in North Carolina. Since winning The Masters at Augusta in April the 29yrs old has only played at seven events, well six really as he withdrew from the Rocket Mortgage Classic after only one round.
The world Number 17 in the rankings has been looking more like his normal self at his last two events after his green jacket hangover when he took some time out.
Last week he was involved in the play-off I mentioned at the WGC FedEx St Jude between my 80/1 selection Sam Burns and winner Abraham Ancer.
What makes that performance even more ipressive is that the week before he was battling it out in his homeland Japan for a gold medal at the Olympics where he was in contention all the way and looked the most likely winner only to fall behind on the final few holes to finish in a seven-way play-off for the bronze medal where he narrowly missed out finishing T4th.
Since The Masters, in the few events Hideki has played, he also finished a very respectable 26th at The US Open at Torrey Pines.
I’ve watched Hideki closely the past few weeks and I can’t see it being much longer before this superstar with god-like status back home bags another victory and it could well be this weekend winning the Wyndham Championship.
Louis Oosthuizen
For my next suggestion I’m going to advise Louis Oosthuizen 18/1 EW Bet365. The 38yrs old veteran from South Africa who seems to have been around forever is all over my radar and is most certainly going to win a tournament sooner rather than later.
He has been knocking on the door at almost every tournament he enters. Check this out, in his last eight events he has finished in the Top 20 on no less than seven occasions with five of those on the Top 10 and four in the Top 5.
Now you’ll probably agree with me on this that this is form that you just simply can’t ignore but it’s even more spectacular when you consider that three of those Top 5 finishes were Majors with two of them runners-up positions; T2nd at the PGA Championship, 2nd at the US Open with the other being such an unlucky 3rd at The 149th Open Championship at Royal St George’s, this is all in the last couple of months, truly remarkable.
The others worth a mention are T2nd at 3M Open and 8th at the Valspar Championship. Oosthuizen also fared not too badly at the WGC FedEx St Jude last weekend finishing 17th. I can only see this talented South African with a well deserved victory anytime soon and I wouldn’t be surprised if it was in North Carolina this Sunday evening.
Hank Lebioda
For my next pick I’m going to look for some good old value and for that reason I’m liking the look of Hank Lebioda 66/1 EW Ladbrokes.
The 27yrs old from Orlando, Florida has been in good form recently and the 66/1 on offer looks like a cracking price in my book.
Lebioda is still hunting that elusive maiden PGA Tour victory but it’s fair to say he is getting closer and closer and I don’t want to miss out when it happens. He withdrew at his most recent tournament at the 3M Open where I tipped him at 50/1. He withdrew due to personal reasons after two rounds when making the cut comfortably and was right in the mix at the top of the Leaderboard.
At his three events previous to the 3M Open he finished inside the Top 10 at all three attempts; T8th at the John Deere Classic, T4th at the Rocket Mortgage Classic and T5th at the Travelers Championship.
Lebioda arrives here this week with form that most who are half or less his 66/1 price in this field can’t boast about. It always confuses me how the firms price up the markets sometimes but if you do your homework there is almost value to be had week in, week out and Hank Lebioda represents our mission statement this week to empty those bookies satchels with even just a place returning a tidy profit.
Robert MacIntyre v Kevin Kisner
For my final selection it’s the customary 72 hole matchbet and I’m going to advise our very own superstar Robert MacIntyre to get the better of Kevin Kisner 9/10 Nap Betfair.
