On the PGA Tour this week The Caddy looks forward to the Rocket Mortgage Classic at Detroit Golf Club, Detroit, Michigan.
The 156 field will be competing on this par 72 parkland course for $7.5 M purse with the winner collecting the title and $1.35 M.
Bryson De Chambeau returns to defend the title he won last year when defeating Matt Wolff by three stokes to win fairly comfortably.
The weather is forecast to be sunny and warm throughout with the thunderstorms over the past few days moving on.
The key attribute in Detroit this week will be power and accuracy from tee to green and with all the thunderstorms over the past few days it’s going to suit a big hitter for sure with the track softening up.
Last week on the PGA Tour I selected Abraham Ancer at 28/1 and although he never won he still landed some decent each way money finishing fourth, while my Nap of the tournament at the Travelers Championship won comfortably when Charley Hoffman seen off Matt Wolff.
It was yet another profitable weekend as over on the European Tour as I selected the winning 1-2 yet again with my main selection Viktor Hovland winning his maiden European title with my next best, Martin Kaymer finishing runner up. Well done to everyone who followed my selections last weekend.
Joachim Niemann
So let’s get on with this weeks selections for the Rocket Mortgage Classic. For my main selection I’m going to advise Joachim Niemann 25/1 EW Betfair.
The young, talented, 22yrs old from Chile has fast been a rising star on the PGA circuit and is currently ranked inside the Top 30 best golfers in the world.
It’s fair to say that the Chilean hasn’t improved on his good start to the year when finishing runner-up at both the Sentry Tournament of Champions and also the Sony Open in Hawaii but he has had seven Top 30 finishes since including 8th at the Valspar Championship so all in all, not too bad.
He was 40th at The Masters in April and an even better 31st at The US Open so the form book still reads well for this talented kid.
I just feel that with plenty good times ahead on the horizon this course will more than suit Niemann’s game. He finished fifth here in 2019 and can go even better this time around.
He has won an event on the PGA Tour when winning the Military Tribute at the Greenbrier so nerves shouldn’t be a problem if contending.
Bryson De Chambeau
For my next suggestion I’m going to advise the one and only powerhouse that is Bryson De Chambeau 8/1 EW Bet365.
The big hitting 27yrs old American has had the rain gods on his side pre-tournament with all the thunderstorms and will be itching to get out there and try to successfully defend his title.
The conditions couldn’t be better for Bryson to do what Bryson does best and tear up courses for fun.
He comes here this week as the top ranked golfer in the field, currently the world’s number six and is most certainly the one they all have to beat.
Last year it was his hit and run tactics that won Bryson this event, just hit the ball as far and accurate as possible then rely on the short game that has improved so much. I just feel that with a few of the world’s top golfers not around this week in Detroit then this opens the door even more for Bryson De Chambeau to go on and destroy this course in good old Bryson fashion with no one around to worry about.
Patrick Reed
For my next selection I’m going to pick Patrick Reed 14/1 EW Betfair.
The 30yrs old from San Antonio is coming off two impressive majors, 8th at The Masters and 19th at the US Open.
In the past few weeks he has finished 6th at the Wells Fargo Championship and 5th at The Memorial Tournament. Last week he finished inside the Top 25 at the Travelers Championship so he does come here with some form and is always a danger.
The world number nine is ranked on the PGA Tour, eighth in strokes gained and ninth in scoring averages.
He has made six Top 10 finishes in the eighteen starts this year and can bring his experience and expertise to put him in contention at yet another event.
He is the second highest ranked golfer in this field and he will show why he is inside the world’s Top 10 this week and I’m sure we will see Partick Reed on the final nine holes on Sunday evening with every chance to win the Rocket Mortgage Classic.
Hideki Matsuyama v Webb Simpson
For my final selection it’s the 72 hole match bet and I’m going to single out Hideki Matsuyama to see off Webb Simpson 10/11 Nap Bet365.
