The European Tour resumes this week with the BMW International at Golfclub Munchen Eichenried, Munich, Germany.
After all the excitement at Torrey Pines last week a few players who play mainly on the PGA tour will be in attendance for this European Tour event including Viktor Hovland, Sergio Garcia and last week’s US Open runner-up Louis Oosthuizen.
I’ve mentioned the US Open and congratulations to Jon Rahm in my PGA Tour preview for this week’s Travelers Championship.
The 156 field will be competing on this par 72 parkland lay out for the €1.5 M prize pot with the winner collecting €240,000.
The weather forecast in Munich throughout the tournament this weekend is for rain, rain, rain so if your going, take a brolly! ☂️
This event will be screened live on Sky Sports Golf with coverage starting at 11.30 am GMT on Thursday.
Viktor Hovland
So let’s get on with a few selections, for my first and main pick on the European Tour this week I’m going to single out my main pick from last week’s US Open, Viktor Hovland 7/1 EW Bet365.
The young 23 yrs old Norwegian from Oslo will welcome a trip back to Europe especially with the Ryder Cup fast approaching and can build on last week’s disappointment when he had to withdraw from the US Open at Torrey Pines with an eye injury.
He is by far the main attraction in Munich this week and is the highest ranked player in this field, currently ranked 14th among the world’s elite.
Hovland’s rise to fame since turning pro less than two years ago has been nothing short of sensational. This talented kid is always on my radar and as I’ve mentioned in previous previews, it’s only going to be good times ahead.
He has only missed the cut once in his last eighteen events including majors and has already this season bagged a win at the Mayakoba Golf Classic, two runners-up prizes at The Farmers Insurance and WGC Workday Championship at The Concession and also two third place finishes at the Wells Fargo Championship and the Valspar Championship.
I just feel Hovland is head and shoulders above this field and if he has overcome the eye injury from last week then he is the one they all have to beat in Munich this week and can win his first title on European soil.
Martin Kaymer
For my next suggestion I’m going to pick Martin Kaymer 28/1 EW Bet365 . The 36 yrs old German will relish the opportunity to play on home soil at a course he has won on in the past. Remember, this talented golfer has already bagged three majors to his name.
He finished a very respectable 26th at Torrey Pines last week so will come here feeling good. It’s a mixed bag when Kaymer plays golf in his home country but worth noting is seven Top 25 finishes including four in the Top 10 and a runners-up position at this tournament.
He was 16th around here the last time this tournament was staged in 2019 and was leading at the halfway stage. Kaymer is more than capable of winning this event coming off good form at The US Open, this could be his week yet again in his homeland.
Bernd Wiesberger
For my next selection I’m going to advise Bernd Wiesberger 22/1 EW Betfair.
The 35 yrs old from Vienna, Austria is ranked above most in this field and could prove decent each way value.
What is concerning is that he missed the cut at both recent majors after finishing 40th at The Masters. However, on the European Tour the talented Wiesberger is always usually hovering around the top on leaderboards.
He comes here still fresh after his most recent victory on the European Tour at The Made in Himmerland just a few weeks ago.
If he brings that form with him to Munich then he will be hard to beat. With seven European titles already to his name, Kaymer can use his expertise and experience to bag his second victory on the European Tour in a matter of weeks.
Antoine Rozner v Thomas Pieters
For my final selection it’s the customary 72 hole matchbet and I’m going to advise Antoine Rozner to get the better of Thomas Pieters 10/11 Nap Betfair.
