The PGA Tour continues this week with the Wells Fargo Championship at TPC Potomac Avenel Farm, Potomac, Maryland.
The 156 field with the top 65, including ties, making the cut, will all be competing for a share of the $9m prize purse with the winner collecting the title and a cheque for $1.46m.
Rory McIlroy returns to defend his title, if you remember we tipped Rory here on the MFT website to win this last year and the talented Irishman duly obliged at a handsome 20/1. It was Rory’s first victory in over nineteen months. He’s found a groove ever since then and could be the one they all have to beat again.
Last weekend we could only manage runner-up at the Mexico Open after picking winner after winner recently. I so, so badly wanted to include Jon Rahm as my main selection and even thought about making it my Nap but I thought the price was just too skinny at 5/1 with over another 150 players to negotiate.
I wish I had just went with my initial instincts now but then again it’s a case of so you say Caddy, it’s easy to say that now eh?
I did however look for more value and my main selection last week, Tony Finau finished runner up at 25/1 so really I actually gained more than I would have with Rahm at 5/1. The each-way return on Finau was just over 6/1 so we’ll done to everyone who took advantage.
So let’s get back to this week’s Wells Fargo Championship.
This much shorter, Potomac track, will be playing 7,160 yards this week, it’s a par 70 parkland layout where accuracy will be the key to any success.
The weather is forecast to be cloudy but calm on Thursday with thunderstorms predicted on Friday & Saturday.
Sunday’s final round will see the best weather with sunny & warm conditions. Breezes are expected to peak at around 15mph.
This event will be screened on Sky Sports Golf & Sky Sports Main Event with live coverage starting at 12pm GMT on Thursday afternoon.
So let’s move on with this weeks selections.
Rory McIlroy
For my first and main selection I’m thinking to myself, do I make the same mistake as last weekend and leave out the hot favourite? I’m always looking for value but my role is to pick winners so for that reason I’m going to point you in the direction of Rory McIlroy 9/1 EW Bet365.
You all know by now that the 32 year old Irishman is one of my favourites. I only try to select Rory when I think he will win obviously but maybe sometimes my heart rules my head. Rory is defending his title after winning this tournament last year but remember, it’s being played on a totally different golf course.
Quail Hollow, where Rory won this event last year, is being used for the Presidents Cup in September so the venue was moved to here at TPC Potomac. That’s why I’m surprised to see Rory’s odds so short but I’m not allowing that to sway me this week.
Rory’s performance last time out at The Masters was sublime. He finished runner-up to our main selection and eventual winner Scottie Scheffler but Rory was my next best at The Masters so realty we picked 1st & 2nd yet again.
Rory’s been firing on all cylinders recently and all those twigs and tweaks seem to all be coming together, I hope not just in time for this weekend but for the 150th Open Championship at St Andrews.
How good would it be to see Rory lift the claret jug at the home of golf or Bob MacIntyre or a few others I could think of.
Since winning this last year Rory has won The CJ Cup but more importantly, he’s been competing and challenging again at most events. That’s why he’s ranked the 7th best player on the planet.
In the eight events that the Irishman has played this year he’s finished inside the Top 20 on six occasions with three being Top 10 finishes and two of the Top 5. I’m not missing out again with the winner this weekend so Rory McIlroy is my main selection to show them all who’s the best in this field.
Tony Finau
For my next suggestion I’m going to again advise last week’s selection Tony Finau 25/1 EW 10bet.
The talented 32 year old from Salt Lake City can go one better this weekend after last weeks runner up finish at the Mexico Open.
He finished with a final round reading 63 on the scorecard and that’s how I believe Finau will arrive for the Wells Fargo Championship.
Since winning The Northern Trust, Finau has four Top 20 finishes with two of those Top 10s, 7th at the Hero World Challenge and T2nd at last week’s Mexico Open as mentioned above.
This week it’s going to be all about accuracy from tee to green and there’s no one better in the business than Tony Finau when it comes to these stats but only if he brings his A-game.
This layout is all set up for Finau’s game and conditions will more than suit, so I’m sticking with Tony Finau to produce the goods and go one better on his way to collecting his third PGA crown.
Si Woo Kim
For my next pick I’m going to look for some good old value and for that reason I’ll single out Si Woo Kim 50/1 EW Bet365.
The talented 26 year old from Seoul, South Korea already has three PGA titles in the bag at such a young age and it’s about time the youngster won another.
It’s hard to go on Si Woo Kim’s recent form as it’s been a mixed bag really. His best recent performances this year include T13th at the Valero Texas Open, T11th at the Farmers Insurance Open and also T11th at The American Express.
He was defending his title at The American Express having won that event in 2021, his most recent victory. The other titles Si Woo Kim can boast are The Players’ Championship in 2017 and the Wyndham Championship in 2016.
He comes here sitting just outside the Top 50 in the rankings so will be aiming to get back inside that Top 50 with all the perks and benefits it brings on both the PGA and DP World Tours.
Si Woo Kim also finished inside the Top 20 at the recent WGC Dell Technologies Matchplay finishing 18th so if he comes here with the form he’s more than capable off producing then he could easily make the bookies look silly at such generous odds, currently 50/1.
Abraham Ancer v Tyrrell Hatton
For my final selection it’s the customary matchbet and this week I’m really liking the look of Abraham Ancer to beat Tyrrell Hatton over 72 holes 10/11 Nap Betfair.
